air as retained, air as a cloud, air as water.

today the air was filled with the heat that the pavement retains
the kind that lingers
that burns your feet if you don't wear sandals

tonight the air was filled with the heat that fills a cloud
that makes your hair curl
and makes your shirt stick to you

i opened my blinds to see if there was any fresh air that wanted to come in
to remove the blanket of heat that was slowing our words down
but there was no wind; nor any notable change in temperatures.

so we laid down to watch a movie,
because there was no sense in moving at all.
and right in the middle -

it rained.

a good rain -
the kind that flows down the sidewalk
it was so loud that we could barely hear the movie

but it was a beautiful rain.
