random thoughts of the evening:
- writing the essay: tommy takes a class called "writing the essay" which i always think is funny and he always proclaims extreme hatred for. as i go to school for writing, while he writes his essays he often says "ugh! how could you go to school for this!" i usually laugh and say "oh, because i enjoy it." i do enjoy writing - but writing the essay...well, it came to my attention today that other than the two film papers i wrote last semester, i haven't really written an essay that was going to be graded since...sometime first semester last year. until today - when i wrote a good old fashioned robinson crusoe essay. i think that more interesting than me trying to write this essay will be my teacher trying to read it. as it turns out, the downfall of going to school for dialogue-driven writing is having to write an essay.
- the oscars: i could write forever, but i'll spare you. by "i'll spare you" i didn't mean i wasn't going to write about it at all - i meant that i will refrain from writing forever. okay, so here's the thing - ya know how dads get about the superbowl? well, in my family my mom gets like that too...but you know what i mean? that's me for the oscars. i get ridiculously excited and the boring awards don't bore me. so, i was quite happy to be watching for 3.5 hours last night. BUT - what did not make me happy - was the changes that they made in the show in attempt to keep it shorter. one of my favorite things about the academy awards is the honor that they give to each and every person who contributes to a movie -- a makeup artist is just as important as a sound mixer who is just as important as a documentary short filmmaker who is just as important as the director of the year. in an attempt to save time, the academy (or abc? i don't know who makes the calls) decided that for certain awards, all of the nominees would stand on stage as they were being called (including animated feature and documentary feature)... this means that they were not as important as the people who were allowed to sit in their seats. furthermore, some categories were so unimportant that they didn't even get to go on stage to make their speech - instead they had to awkwardly stand in the aisle and talk into an impromptu looking microphone. maybe this saved time - it doesn't matter. placing some awards on a pedastal over others does the opposite of what i've always loved -- it makes some people involved in the process less important than others.
- sorry about that: but i'm really not happy about it! and i plan on writing them a strongly worded letter. (jack dawson?)
- pink lemonade: why does it taste different than yellow lemonade? and where can i find pink lemons?
- charlie kaufman: won the oscar for best original screenplay... :o) ... and, his acceptance speech was brilliant. i wish he and i could hang out.
- similarly: i wish martin scorsese would come over for dinner. i've made the executive decision that he is the kind of man that would come over for dinner and put a whoopie cushion under someone's chair, and when they sat down, he'd cackle to himself...because i'm pretty sure that not only does he play pranks like that but he gets quite the kick out of himself when he does. plus - he's five foot four. and he has awesome glasses.
- my film journal: for cinematic expression, we have to keep a journal of films we watch and write about them "intelligently" ... i've been doing an okay job and doing so. here's the thing - i'm strongly considering writing an entry about win a date with tad hamilton! ... you see, i have a couple of reasons for thinking that i should do this. one, is that whether i'm taking a film class or not - i did watch tad hamilton and i did enjoy it. reason two - just because we're educated in film and i'm sure the school hopes that we aspire to make good ones, doesn't mean that the tad hamilton genre (as it's called) is nonexistant. it's out there! and it's influential (well...) ... do i have reasons for thinking i shouldn't write this entry? yes, but only one: it's win a date with tad hamilton!
- snow: the sky is falling! continuously, for hours! make it stop!
- chicken little: disney is making a chicken little movie and i'm looking forward to seeing it. just thought i'd share.
- anyway: i guess i'll go...
smiles to all of you...
