Academics for the week:
Astronomy: pset due today (assigned a week ago), midterm Thursday.
Computer Science: homework assignment due Friday, midterm next week.
Japanese: Edit paper. Do reading. Unusually, this week is all reading--I'm looking forward to it. I like Ozawa-sensei's taste in readings.
Italian: Whole workbook. Watch a whole movie. Read a chapter of an Italian novel (in which we're pretty much guaranteed to need to look up every other word). Write out worksheets on the movie and chapter. Rewrite paper for Friday. Learn grammar and vocabulary. Self-check workbook.
Time estimates:
Astronomy: ~6 hours, maybe more if I need to feel confident for midterm. Most weeks are closer to 2 hours. It's just that we have a midterm.
CS: ~2 hours, because this is our first Javascript assignment. It should be noted that at least 1 of these hours will probably be class time.
Japanese: ~2 hours, maybe 3, depending on how long the readings take.
Italian: ~12.5. About 3 for the workbook (large chunk of that time is for audio stuff that can't be rushed), about 3 for the movie, another 1 for the chapter, another 1 for the worksheets, 1.5 for the paper, 2 for the grammar and vocab, and 1 for the workbook corrections. Oh, plus the extra class time compared to everything else--add another 2 for that, since it's not all that unusual for classes to meet 3 times a week, that brings it up to 14.5.
THIS IS INSANE. And we did try talking to the professor. He says we 'need practice' and that 'it's an intensive class'. I do not know what else to do. And you know what? Yes, since I'm taking it credit non, I can skimp on some of this. I'll end up spending closer to 2 hours on the workbook, closer to an hour on the essay. But there's a point where it's impossible. Like, I can either NOT DO any of the audio exercises and that would shave off some time--but I'd be missing half my workbook and that would be a huge hit on my grade. Or I could skip the movie--but I'd be missing homework and participation and some quiz points on the next quiz, which is a big chunk of stuff considering the movie will have subtitles and won't help my language skills much at all. And the reading and essay are the parts here that actually help my language skills, so I don't want to skimp on those.
I do not know what to do about this class. The work load is just crazy. It is frustrating. The biggest time drains are the things that don't help with language--subtitled movies and audio that WE DON'T EVEN NEED TO UNDERSTAND to answer. AND THE PROFESSOR IS NOT LISTENING. And I don't want to go to a dean over a class that IS intensive and I AM taking credit non and complain that it's too much work; without a TON of backup (which most of the other students just don't have time to give) it sounds like whining.
Mreh. This is my documentation of why this class is insane.
