This weekend, I bought a new point and shoot camera. I wanted to spend many dollars on a D-SLR camera, but I bought a modest point and shoot instead. It was to replace my nearly five year old camera, so it was a welcome addition, at any rate.

So I got a Canon Powershot A720 IS. Not the fanciest thing around, but it had all the options I needed. It's an 8MP camera, which beats my old 3.2MP camera hands down. It also has image stabilization, which means that pictures will come out with less human error! There are also manual settings on the camera, which means I will be able to learn more about photography in general, and nail down my technique before I spend $1200+ on a D-SLR. Hopefully, I will make all the right mistakes, and will learn quickly.

Stephanie recently bought a Nikon D40, which piqued my interest. It was a lot of fun to play with, and made me think about pursuing this hobby more vigorously. She also introduced me to an awesome site where people can critique your photos...at www.photosig.com. It has been really wonderful seeing how many really great self-taught photographers out there. I'm not big on taking classes...I'd much rather read a book and learn from experience. So far, it's been a real treat figuring things out on my own. I went to the library today before work and picked up some books on photography. I'm also doing more research as to the Canon vs. Nikon debate. Since both companies are primarily lens companies, not camera companies, AND the simple fact that you can use Nikon lenses on a Canon, but not Canon on a Nikon? I think I'm leaning towards the Canon for a D-SLR. Also, I like that Canon puts the image stabilization in the lenses instead of the camera body itself. Yeah, it makes the lenses more expensive...but who cares?

So. I'm learning. It's totally fun. Tomorrow, Alan and I are going to Berry to shoot some pictures. It's one of my favorite places to take pictures, and we'll also get a chance to meander on campus. We might hike the trail while we're there, too...it's supposed to be in the 60's! Woo hoo!

Anyway. It's late. Nighty night.
