Summary: In which Taemin discovers that not everything that bling blings is immune to emotional outbursts.

The first time Taemin sees Jonghyun cry it scares the crap out of him, because the outburst is so violent and, above all, unexpected.

He has by then gotten used to thinking of Jonghyun as a kind of an epitome of everything cool - the perfect combination of cool and fierce, passionate and stoic - despite occasional evidence against this. In fact Taemin has barely learned not to flinch as the older boy enters the room, so when Jonghyun doubles over after the manager has announced their upcoming debut, it very nearly gives the magnae a heart attack in turn.

“Dude,” Minho says, his tone clearly uncomfortable and face carefully blank as Jonghyun’s shoulders shake in unison with his loud sobs. Jinki is flakily waving his hands in Jonghyun’s direction but is more or less forced to discuss slightly more pressing matters with the manager, and Kibum’s lower lip is shaking in a manner that suggests that no support is to be expected in that direction, either.

Unfortunately that sort of kind of maybe possibly only leaves Taemin to take care of the emergency situated on the chair right next to his.

“Uh,” he tries intelligently and, as this rouses no response, glances at Minho desperately. Help, he mouths, but Minho shakes his head in confusion. He isn’t used to things like this, he has only ever comforted a crying girl, and even that was in second grade after he accidentally kicked Sooyoung from class 2-B during a football match.

In the here and now Taemin lifts his eyebrows pointedly, trying to put sufficient emphasis on the urgent nature of the required assistance, but Minho simply mouths back I don’t know, he’s older than I am, you figure it out.

Thanks, hyung.

“Uh,” Taemin attempts for the second time, “uh, Jonghyun hyung? Are you alright?” The other boy nods his head, or at least Taemin assumes he does. It’s hard to tell with all the sobs.

“Uh. Good, hyung. That’s good.” Taemin feels that this isn’t quite enough, so he pats his pockets and manages to find a crumpled but more or less clean handkerchief.

“Uh, if you would like a- uh, you have some- Um. Here you go, hyung.”

When Taemin later on recalls that day, he always thinks of the handkerchief as One Big Mistake, because upon seeing what Taemin tries to offer him Jonghyun’s cries climb all the way to the top of all known hysterical scales.

He does, however, accept the wad of paper, wailing a wet sort of thanks into it before another wave of tears tries to drown him.

“Dude,” Minho repeats in astonishment.

It takes several more attempts and a whole quickly located packet of Kleenex to calm Jonghyun down, and in the end it requires the combined effort of all four of them, with occasional interruptions caused by Kibum’s considerably lesser tears and small-scale setbacks that they later learn to attribute to the Onew Condition (“Don’t cry, just think how happy your family will be!” being an especially bad one, what with that one making even Minho, Taemin and Jinki himself choke).

Taemin remembers that day particularly well when they win first place at Music Bank right on the day of their comeback, and Jonghyun is - once again - forced by his surprisingly tender nature to fly into hysterics.

Only this time it doesn’t freak anyone, least of all Taemin, out, and Jonghyun is allowed to dry his tears into the warm shoulders of his members (“Dry cleaning for this jacket,” Minho muses later when they are backstage and Jonghyun is out of earshot, “but who cares? It’s on the company.”).

Taemin, though, haunted by some less-than-thrilling parts of his otherwise so fond memories, is still careful not to carry a handkerchief on him during these occasions.
