Being like this, Donghae thinks, is like floating in water made easier. He idly turns his head as yet another hopeful sparkle tries to catch his eye. Three hundred and fifty four, still counting. Technically speaking no oxygen equals no wind, but Donghae doesn’t let reality interfere with his whatever this may be, and so he lets the soft breeze carry him further away from the green and gold of number 354. There will be others, this isn’t the one. For all he knows it could be a supernova he has been looking for all this time - years, days, months, seconds - something that no longer exists. It doesn’t matter, though. He has no idea where he is and clearly, he reasons, there never was a better way of finding something you didn’t know was missing than getting lost yourself as well.

The more or less constant darkness surrounding him begins to vaguely fade until, little by little, it finally breaks into a spectrum of dusk, tinted in shades ranging from copper to eggshell blue. Donghae spins gently around, swimming in the crowded emptiness and sees giant columns of slowly spinning dust, colossal pillars creating themselves from scratch over and over again. The Eagle Nebula, Donghae can almost hear the voice of his high school physics teacher explaining, constellation of Serpens, Pillars of Creation, Hubble space telescope... Great big foreign words that have held next to no meaning to Donghae until now. Because of those words, in stead of somewhere he now is here, and even if the big words filling his mind are only names for things he doesn’t understand, they most definitely qualify as a map out here. Donghae closes his eyes and pictures the main road of his home town in his mind, the way he remembers it from his childhood, except for replacing the familiar sign-post with one that reads Milky Way. In a way there’s more truth in that than in his memories.

Donghae opens his eyes as he drifts onwards. There is no use trying to count the stars in the nebula, not anymore, but it doesn’t really matter. He grins to himself. They are all there anyway, there’s no need for him to worry so much. He isn’t going to miss the one he is looking for, he is sure of it.
