Summary: Rainy days never stays
It’s raining today, just like it rained yesterday and the day before, it simply keeps on raining and the TV news anchors have taken to wondering whether the river will overflow or not. There’s no telling apart these empty days, dull, hushed and endlessly grey, only the colours of umbrellas on the street changing as people hurry by. With nothing better to do eleven boys follow the monotony through a window, eleven spirits weighed down by the ever-falling drops. Eleven, not twelve. Eleven, not thirteen.
One missing from the apartment is slowly walking along the river bank, slowly pushing a small pile of mud forward with his foot, his shoes getting dirtier by the minute, an umbrella lying on the ground under a near-by tree, long forgotten.
It’s not that he doesn’t like it, be ‘it’ anything for all he knows. Most of the time he does. But from his puzzle there always seem to be pieces missing and the picture becomes distorted and it’s hard to fix it on your own because it’s simply too difficult to figure out how to fill the missing bits. He halts, the bright voice from the morning weather report echoes through his mind, but even that breaks into fragments and he can’t bring himself to remember what they said about the river that surges so very near him.
Suddenly someone calls out his name, their voice cutting through the cotton wool of his confused memories. Before he has the time to react there’s a blur of bright colours that turns into a gasped breath, in through the teeth, a smile appearing from nowhere, laughter filling the world from one edge of the sky to the other. Turning around Kibum sees just what he has missed, missed though he hasn’t realised it, soft hair, sun-kissed skin, freckles across the bridge of the nose so faint they almost go unnoticed. The one who completes the thirteen.
"Look!" Water gets into their eyes as they tilt their heads.
"Look!" He now remembers but knows better. If the river overflows, it will be filled with happiness in stead of water.
More laughter and neither one of them no longer knows loneliness.
