I just read that Native American and Alaska Native women are 2.5 times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted than other women in the United States. One in three of these women are likely to be raped in their lifetimes. One in three.
According to the 2005 American Community Survey, the total female population in the U.S was an estimated 150.4 million. The total estimated Native American and Alaska Native (alone or in combination with one or more races) population was 4,154,705. Of that number, women made up an estimated 2,131,363 (51.3%) , with 1,139,324 between the ages of fifteen and fifty. In the 12 months prior to the 2005 ACS, 73,608 had given birth, with 35,618 being unmarried.
