Most peculiar

I have to admit that this year's Sunnydale Highschool Prom has been one of the strangest events I have attended in some years.  It was not only realising that Dawn - who I have considered to be a child for as long as I have known her - is about to graduate from high school; nor the fact that the prom was crashed by aproximately a dozen demons - ( Read more... )

I knock on Giles' door. The whole planned feeling about the attack on the prom has been bothering me, and I really want to discuss it with him. And also the bizarre group of student helpers in the fight.

I don't know whether he noticed London with me, but I guess I should talk to him about her, too. I'm thinking he's not gonna be wild about me taking a crazy vamp under my wing, but so far she's been nothing but helpful. I lean the heel of my hand on the door jamb and wait. Maybe I should have called first.

I open the door with one hand, cradling a book on lycanthrope histories in the other. "Ah, Buffy, come in," I say absently, walking back over to the table and picking up another book. Placing it on top of the one I'm already holding, I flick through it, trying to find the right page. I'm sure that I saw.. "Ah, yes, here it is - there's a conflict here. The Histories say that," I look up and see the look on her face. "Right, yes.." she's not interested, I'm not surprised. I put both books down. "What can I do for you?"

"Whatcha researching?" I ask, glancing at the books. "'Cause I'm wondering if we should be looking into someone or something behind the demon attack."

I catch the title of one of the books. "Lycanthropy, huh? Was that the strangest werewolf behavior ever, or what?" It really had been odd to watch the wolf fight side by side with Amanda like they were a team.

"One of many strange events at the prom," I say, walking into the kitchen and filling the kettle. "Tea?"

"Uh...sure, that'd be great," I say, following him and waiting in the doorway. No pressing engagements at the moment. "Yeah, I'll say. Why does evil have to go after stuff like that? It just can't stand to let the kids have a good time." My voice is a little petulant.

I pour two cups and hand one to her. "I would imagine it depends what your idea of a 'good time' is," I comment, wandering back over to the table. "I'm afraid I haven't turened my mind to whether the attack was organised, yet. I seem to have been rather sidetracked with the subject of those who sprang to our aid and for that I seem to be trying to cover several subjects at once. Lycanthropy has me at the moment, but also witchcraft and slayers." I look up at her at the last, waiting to see her reaction.

I take the cup and wander back toward the living room."Witchcraft is Will's department, but you can shoot any slayery ideas my way." I think for a minute, and realize he's probably talking about Amanda. "That Amanda sure put up a wicked fight, I must say. Got to see her up close and personal with that last demon we found in the closet."

"Yes." I took a sip of my tea and wondered how to phrase this. "You probably didn't notice, but did the way she fought seem, well, familiar in any way?" I ask cautiously.

"Uhh..." He's got me stumped on that one. "What, she fights like me? You thinks she's another slayer?" I think about it for a minute. "Well, I did die again...or is it Faith that had to have died?" The whole slayer line thing still confuses me after all these years.

"i don't think she's another slayer," I say slowly. "And from what I have found, I believe that another Slayer will only be called once Faith died. No, I believe she is a potential slayer."

"A what?" I ask. That's a new one on me. "Potential slayer? You mean, like you get powers before you're called?" I sure don't remember anything like that happening to me. I wasn't even that great of a cheerleader.

"No, not like that. It's like," I think for a moment to formulate my words. "You were born a potential slayer. You had the right outlook, abilities, and so on to handle the power gifted to you when you were called. At any time there may only be one - fine, possibly two - slayers, but there are innumerable potentials. Girls who may never be called, never be anything but normal girls, normal women, but should the need arise, they may be chosen, as you were. Normally, the Council tracks down as many of these girls as possible and trains them from a young age, however that normally depends on their parents or some close relative being aware of the Council's existence. Many of them go through their entire lives not knowing that they are different. I believe Amanda may be such a girl - she definitely exhibited the correct traits."

"Oh, like Kendra. How she went to her watcher when she was little, never got to have friends, that whole deal." I still feel bad about her very short life without those things. "So that would explain the whole my never getting any training, or even a handbook, huh? My mom and dad being in the ignorant of all things weird category." Not so sure I hadn't had the better deal after all.

"So you think Amanda's a potential? She sure did a number on the demons." I take a sip of the tea. "Is there a way to know for sure? Like, a test or something?" And please let it not be like tossing her into a creepy old house with a very hungry vampire type of test. Wouldn't wish that one on my worst enemy.

"That's what I'm looking into," I say, indicating the books. "I think there must be for the Council always seemed to know."
