Richard Wilkins.
Of course.
In the course of our research several years ago in our efforts to stop his Ascension, we realized that it was not Wilkins' ancestors who founded Sunnydale, but Wilkins himself. To what end, we could only speculate.
Perhaps now we'll find out.
I suppose
Wesley and I shouldn't have been as surprised as we were upon learning that Richard Wilkins was the acting mayor of Sunnydale. However, I maintain the possibility that encountering an old enemy several hundred years in the past was not the foremost dilemma on our minds.
Thank Heaven the Master isn't supposed to arrive in Sunnydale for several more years. His church hasn't even been built yet.
Our more immediate problem, however, has more to do with preserving the status quo in the future. Unlikely as it may sound, our presence here has suddenly become more dangerous than previously realized.
As Wesley and I discussed, Mayor Wilkins and I dealt with each other face-to-face several times leading up to Graduation Day, and never once did he mention that we'd met before. Given the man's ego and his tendency to chat incessantly, he would have surely mentioned something to that effect.
In fact, given my association with
Buffy as her Watcher, had he been aware of my presence in Sunnydale due to meeting me now, more than likely he would have attempted a preliminary strike against her through me...possibly before she and I had ever met.
So it is reasonable to assume that, as history stands now, I never met Richard Wilkins face-to-face until my days as a librarian at Sunnydale High. Thus, any contact I might have with him myself could potentially jeopardize Buffy, the future, and subsequently the world.
I must say, considering the ramifications of any potential time paradoxes gives me an awful bloody headache.
Fortunately, Wesley's contact with the man was extremely sparce compared to my own, making it far safer for him to deal with Wilkins directly. I will have to relegate myself to the background as much as possible during our stay here in Sunnydale, while Wesley becomes our "public face," as it were.
Wesley has already had to deal with the illustrious Mayor face-to-face, having successfully secured a substantial loan for any essentials we might need, including immediate room and board. I must say, he was quite disgusted by the encounter. Apparently, Richard Wilkins of the past is just as egotistical and distasteful as he is in his future.
Perhaps knowing this, we can use it to our advantage.
Now we must decide our next move...
