So far this fall TV season has started out better than last season. I know there's still more shows on the horizon, but there's so many I'm trying on for size figured I'd try to do a synopsis after I've watched a few...
Ok, I may as well just break them down so far.
Ringer - a tad cliche. Very soapy, but it does have potential. I'm not the biggest Sarah Michelle Gellar fan in the world, but I can see places this show can go and be interesting. Unfortunately Bridgette and Siobhan aren't exactly the smartest set of twins in the world. For one, Siobhan's fakey death was way to complex of a scheme and it is easily going to catch up with her. Also, the fact that Bridgette's first thought is to put herself in Siobhan's place and take over her life? These two are like apples and oranges and have had no contact for 6 years, not the greatest plan ever. However, I am curious to see how it all works out, and it CAN be interesting and the leads have chemistry.
Up All Night - is shakey at best. I love Christina Applegate and I love Will Arnett, but for some reason the first episode fell flat for me. I have a feeling they were kind of angling for a "Raising Hope" feel, but they missed it by a long shot. The series has heart, but I'm not really interested in seeing two adults learning how to be parents. I'll give it a few more episodes but I just wasn't hooked out of the gate at all, and other than the swearing and realizing they needed to stop I didn't really laugh. Granted...for some reason I'm not a fan for comedies written and shot the way The Office and Modern Family is, I'm weird I guess but it just feels kind of...cold.
Free Agents - left me disappointed. I love Kathryn Hahn and I love Hank Azaria, they both have comedic timing in spades, but I felt like this episode just sat spinning it's wheels. It didn't really go anywhere and kind of went in a boring and cliche direction. I'll give it a few episodes, but it just feels like we were dropped into the middle of a story, so it's hard to care about anyone involved.
2 Broke Girls - this, I kind of loved. I'm a sucked for two camera comedies, they seem warmer to me and I've learned with time to generally ignore a laugh track. The leads have great chemistry together, and I kind of love that for once a comedy didn't make a rich socialite a dumb bimbo, so it's definitely refreshing. I'm not a fan of some of the secondary characters, but this series could end up with some smart quips and fun bantering between the leads. Hopefully this potential isn't squandered.
New Girl - I'll admit, with the glasses on for over half the episode I kept forgetting I was watching something other than Bones since Zooey Deschanel favours her sister so much. This series also has some potential, as long as they try to pull back on the quirkiness of the characters. Right now some of the characters are OTT quirky to the point of almost annoying, but again I'll give it a few weeks before I make my final decision.
Unforgettable - I haven't finished this pilot yet, but half an hour in I keep ticking off all the seriously wasted potential. Here you have someone who is medically unable to forget anything they have seen/touched/heard whatever, basically a real live Barbara Gordon. So what do they do? They have her stare in space for five minutes to recall something, then have her stare at herself reliving the experience as though she was an outsider. It's weird and stupid. If you are recalling something it will be from YOUR point of view, not someone elses, so it annoyed. I think this series could have tons of potential but I'm not sure at this point if any of it will ever be employed.
Rizzoli & Isles - yeah I know this is on hiatus for a few months, but I wanted to just squee about this show for a while. Seriously, if you want a modern day Xena and Gabrielle, this show has it in spades. Not to mention it's interesting and fun as well.
That's all I have so far, still quite a few more shows coming out that are new I'm sure I'll give my opinion on, but this time last year I was seriously depressed about the stupidity that was on my screen.
