Man another hard one, this one is definitely going to boggle my mind because it's hard for me to make a distinction between good actors/esses and ones I think are hot and will follow anywhere...again, in no particular order.
5. Anna Torv (Olivia Dunham - Fringe) - I was shakey on Anna in the first season of Fringe. She still hadn't nailed down the accent and was kind of to cold as Olivia, but then crazy shit happened at the end of the first season and I was left baffled wondering what the fuck had just happened. Then the second season started, Anna was still pulling it out strong, definitely having bloomed into Olivia completely. Third season rolled around and she played multiple parts, not only with ease, but with complete believability. I adored Olivia and felt bad for her and I wanted altOlivia to drop dead in two seconds. I did like altOlivia's fire more than Olivia's reserved nature, but it was still two distinct characters.
4. John Noble (Walter Bishop - Fringe) - How do you follow up on a bastard like Denethor who is rotten to the core? Play a psychotic scientist of course! John Noble has been fantastic from the start. He plays a character I should completely dispise, and I KNOW I should hate this character...but I can't. Walter has done awful horrible things, and since he had bits of his brain removed he has no clear recollection of those things which gives him this childlike nature where you have a hard time being upset with him. John Noble then switched gears this third season and playe Walternate, an evil bastard who doesn't care that he is on a campaign to kill 6 billion people out of vengence. Like Anna Torv, two distinctly different characters and played masterfully. You know when you are looking at Walternate and Walter on screen, and NOT strictly due to costuming and hair. John Noble takes on a completely different presence with both characters that just looking at how he holds himself narrows down which character is on screen.
3. Michael C. Hall (David Fisher - Six Feet Under, Dexter - Dexter) - A virtual unknown when SFU came out, so I was kind of meh on him at first. I mean it was hard to relate to prissy, cold and cut off David Fisher (hell, it was hard to relate to ANY of the Fisher's they were so damn messed up), but then around the 3rd or 4th season I GOT David Fisher. A man who was just being crushed by this huge weight HE put on himself, and jealous of his older brother who didn't give a shit about anyone but himself. Seeing Michael C. Hall in interviews and seeing him as David Fisher were two entirely different people, mostly due to Michael C. Hall having a much warmer presence about him than David Fisher did. Then Dexter Morgan came around. Talk about a 180 from his previous character. Dexter and David aren't even in the same categories of fucked upness, and Dexter is more awkward than David's fear of being gay. I gotta hand it to Michael C. Hall for portraying nearly similar characters but making them different from each other and himself.
2. Clea DuVall (Sofie - Carnivale) - Though all her characters are relatively the same as the others, she always puts a little quirk in them to make them different. But Clea played Sofie interestingly. Mostly because I spent the entire series wondering who the fuck Sofie was. Clea didn't necessarily play her as a blank slate, but definitely played her with dark undertones, to the point you questioned who was more evil, Sofie or Justin (and boy that ending of the series COMPLETELY blew my mind). I've always been surprised that Clea hasn't broken out into more prominent roles since she has proven she can play different types of characters, but that's ok, I can always enjoy her in But I'm a Cheerleader...
1. Lucy Lawless (Xena - Xena: The Warrior Princess) - I'll admit, a lot of my like for Lucy Lawless comes down to those damn baby blues. I'm not saying she's an awful actress, on the contrary she's quite competant, but I'm not convinced she's reached her peak yet, which is unfortunate since she keeps choosing shitty shows to be in. She did great as Xena, and watching all 6 seasons back to back you can see how she grew (especially if you throw the Hercules: The Legendary Journeys trilogy in there for good measure). For me, she was the best Xena in the sixth season and I wish THAT Xena had started the series out (not because she'd soften, but because Lucy grew exponentially as an actress). Hell both her and Renee O'Conner grew as actors. She's a good actress, not necessarily THE best, but I was hard pressed to find something that could come closer (seriously, the woman can play the hell out of drama but chooses B movie shit her husband churns out...when will she learn?).
Honorable mention: Jane Lynch, Gillian Anderson, Linda Hamilton, Anthony Stewart Head, and Neil Patrick Harris.
