The adventures in the weekend

Jul 24, 2007 12:50

I know, I still have many months left but I've already started checking things off my list for the UK.

Converter - check (and I need to make a few more trips overseas in order for the cost of it to be justified dammit)

Documents holder - check (even if it was far simpler than I originally wanted, but it was $18 and from Wilson's, so I shall not complain greatly)

See if visa laws changed - check

Now I just need to get my license renewed *g*. I'm not one to try to travel overseas and go through what I did trying to go to stupid L.A. on an expired license (talk about one step away from strip searching, damn). I also need to invest in a few new books, combined outgoing and incoming trips, my layover will be a total of like 11 hours. Yuck. The second 5 hour one won't be so bad, because I'll be headed home. But six hours before knowing I have to fly over an ocean?

Yeah, not thrilled about that one.

At all.

I also need to go shoe and clothes shopping, but I'm not in a rush for any of that stuff. I have a few months and I hate buying things that AREN'T on clearance.

In other news, nothing really exciting is going on. Not that that is really "new". I don't do anything other than work it seems.

Oh well.

This weekend I went to see Hairspray, which is definitely a fun movie. Even more fun when you start looking for people that were in the original John Waters film (John Waters had a cameo of all cameo's, Ricki Lake in a nearly blink and you'll miss her cameo, and Jerry Stiller in a much meatier cameo). Though, this movie is NOT a remake of the campy 80's classic, this movie is based on the musical with a few winks at the movie.

Nicki Blonsky though a newcomer did an amazing job as Tracy Turnblad. This movie will do to her career what it did to Ricki Lakes (though hopefully she'll make a few better choices than what Ricki did).

Queen Latifah is amazing (though..really..when isn't she?). It's really difficult to not be moved by her "I Know Where I've Been" number. And it's probably the only moment during the movie you won't be smiling, but defintely blown away by the power of the song/voice. Not to mention no one can sell the line "Anymore white people in here and it'll be a suburb" quite like Queen Latifah.

Michelle Pfeiffer is deliciously evil (and still amazingly hot). Though in this movie there was no real redemption for the Von Tussles it wasn't exactly a necessity. Considering how cold Pfeiffer played Velma a redemption wasn't necessary to feel like the character's potential was reached. Technically Amber had her redemption when she told her mom to stop, so it wasn't a let down.

Christopher Walken is amazingly charming as Wilbur. Which is wierd because the guy is always so damn creepy. You can't help but love the silliness of Wilbur because you know he really does completely adore his wife and family. Not to mention the song and dance number he did with John Travolta is just hysterical.

Speaking of John Travolta, I thought he did an OK job as Edna Turnblad. I think all the flak he is getting is a little unfair. Yeah he's a Christian Scientist who have little tolerance for gays, but honestly, if he had THAT big of an issue with gays he NEVER would have done Hairspray (though not a gay movie was written, directed, I believe lyricized, choreographed and made famous by gay men). I had no problem with his rendition of Edna, I liked the sweeter, more shy version as opposed to the gruff chain smoking version played by Divine and Harvey Feirstien. Yes, Travolta ISN'T Divine, but NO ONE was or ever will be, doesn't mean the character of Edna can't be played by others. My issue with Travolta was that damn accent. Ugh. I wished he would have left it, his accent is equivalent to Kevin Costner playing Robin Hood.

Yes, that bad.

As for the supporting cast, I don't really know Zac Efron since I've never laid eyes on High School Musical. For this movie he wasn't half bad, but he has a baby face BIG time, so it was a tad off putting. Amanda Bynes was hilarious as Penny, though she could have been a tad geekier. I wasn't disappointed by her singing voice either.

All in all a very fun movie that is completely ageless. The adult jokes were played in a way that could be taken completely innocent by the younger crowd. Plenty of dancing, plenty of morals, and for fuck sake it is NOT a gay movie. If I read one more comment about cross dressing Edna I will literally scream!

On Sunday I lounged around my house mostly, though I did take advantage of the nice weather and play basketball. Which caused a couple nice blisters on my toes.

Fun.

I came inside to relax for a bit after shooting a few hoops. Which wasn't so bad until I went to wipe up a drop of sweat that seemingly fell down my side.

Except...sweat isn't solid and round.

I proceeded to then jump out of my chair, slam my door shut and whip my shirt off faster than even my girlfriend ever has looked at my side then the inside of my shirt.

Nothing.

Ok, I knew I wasn't dreaming so I looked over were I was sitting and right there on the floor was a baby beetle crawling away on the floor. Which fortunately eased my bug squickiness since it WAS inside my shirt (had it been a spider I probably would have died). I scooped the little beetle up and set it free outside.

And that was my adventures for the weekend.

bug, basketball, movies, update
