This Is Unnecessarily Kinky.

I'm still playing Master Detective Archives: Rain Code with Tem!

Because 'I'm so horny for mysteries right now' was an early line in the game, we've started asking each other 'are you horny for mysteries?' rather than 'do you want to play Rain Code?', which is possibly slightly concerning for our other housemates.

We're partway through the Nail Man investigation; we've just looked around the underground casino.

Yuma: Our office... is a sub?
Riona: Just like you.

There are a lot of fun little references to other fandoms of mine in this game! I've spotted Persona 4 (Shinigami talking about touching a television and getting sucked in), DN Angel (Shinigami bringing up phantom thieves when we look at the art gallery) and Ace Attorney (a 'ladder or stepladder?' exchange when I examined a ladder).

There was a sidequest where the protagonist Yuma tried to find a missing child, and was ultimately presented with the options 'save the child' and 'save yourself'. I chose the 'save yourself' option. Tem, watching me play, was slightly appalled.

Tem: Why did you sacrifice the child?
Riona: I thought it was more realistic. I wouldn't sacrifice myself to save a child I didn't know.
Tem: Wow. We're learning things about you today. Riona 'Fuck Children' Leonhart.
Riona: I just think characters in fiction are too quick to sacrifice themselves! There's a distinction between 'I wouldn't help a child', or even 'I wouldn't reach my hand out to save a child who's drowning', and 'I wouldn't sacrifice my own life to save this child.'
Tem: 'I wouldn't reach my hand out to save a child who's drowning.' Riona, 2023.
Riona: Yeah, it didn't feel like a great idea to say that, even in context. I hope no one is taping our conversation.
Yuma, in-game: But I chose to save my own life over a child's... I'm supposed to be a detective... I can never forgive myself...
Riona: Anyway, it was the right decision because now Yuma's really fucked up over it.
Tem, relenting: He's so fucked up over it. He really hates himself.

I feel there's a five hundred percent chance it'll turn out that we're not actually Yuma Kokohead, but I will continue to call the protagonist Yuma for convenience's sake.

While I'm theorising, I'm also suspicious about how real Kanai Ward is! Yakou said something about how everything seemed like an illusion in the rain, and the text 'illusion in the rain' was highlighted in a way that made it seem potentially significant. And then, walking through the streets, Yuma commented that the city felt familiar, as if 'if you formed my mind into a shape, it'd look like this place'. I don't trust it!

I constantly feel like we're about to get banged in this game. Whenever we're talking to our fellow detectives, they're clearly about to bang us. Whenever we're talking to Shinigami, she's clearly about to bang us.

This game is basically Ace Attorney, but we're constantly getting dommed by a ghost.

Is Vivia Twilight a vampire? Is... is that why he's called Twilight?

Shinigami jokes that Yuma needs to kiss anyone he wants to share the ability of (Halara, in this case), then goes, 'Look at you blush! Did you really want to?' and... yes. Yes, obviously Yuma wants to. Yuma has a great big crush on all of his fellow detectives and it's great.

This handholding mechanic is delightfully gratuitous. We have to hold hands with other characters; it's for the sake of the investigation!

I love that Yuma very earnestly believes that all his colleagues are really cool.

As in many other Kodaka games, the protagonist could be considered a little bland, but I think that works well. The relatively grounded Danganronpa protagonists provide a good contrast to all the larger-than-life characters surrounding them, and it's the same with Yuma. My only real complaint about Yuma is the fact that he constantly repeats the last thing that was said to him in a confused tone; it gets a bit grating sometimes!

I'm enjoying the dynamic between Yuma and Shinigami, which is a lot of fun. I don't think I'm currently shipping them, but there's a definite risk that that's where I'm going to end up.
