It's Unclear Whether He's A Poet.

More adventures in Final Fantasy XVI! I've just met, uh, Lord Byron, which is probably going to be a confusing statement for anyone who hasn't played this game.

Otto was concerned he'd interrupted something between Clive and Jill, Jill said, 'Not at all; we were just discussing strategy,' and I snorted aloud. After writing my Clive/Jill/Cid threesome fic and naming it Talking Strategy, I can't hear 'discussing strategy' as anything but a euphemism.

I miss Cid! I'm feeling his absence more than I was expecting to. I'm sad that the letters system was introduced only after his death and we'll never get a letter from him!

Still, we have elements of Cid within us, in the form of his lightning powers and the threesome we definitely had with him and Jill.

I'm also weirdly sad about the death of vanishingly minor character Kenneth the kitchen head. He was one of the first people to be nice to Clive after he escaped the Empire!

Aww, Clive reuniting with his childhood chocobo! I smiled all the way through that scene.

I also love that the description for Ambrosia's tack includes a quote from Ambrosia: 'Kweh.'

'You couldn't be that person who helped me when chocobos attacked my cart! He was a Bearer, and you are simply a man with a large, suspicious facial scar exactly where a Bearer's brand would be.'

Clive assures the botanist that he's keeping Martelle alive through his continuation of her work, which is a little heartbreaking. It's important for Clive to believe what he's saying; he's essentially replaced himself with Cid in his efforts to keep Cid alive in some form. His name is Cid's name; his work is Cid's work; his dreams are Cid's dreams.

Now that Clive is no longer clearly a Bearer at first glance, the bandits attacking him must have a real 'holy FUCKING SHIT' moment when he breaks out the ludicrous amounts of magic.

This reunion with Wade feels a little awkward, given that we just killed a bunch of his men.

Wade's men appear to be hanging around afterwards to say 'thanks for sparing us', but I am not fooled; I really fucked those guys up and I'm fairly sure they're all ghosts.

Clive has a half-brother out there somewhere? DON'T MOVE ON, I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS.

No offence, Wade, but I had such a strong ':( I miss Cid' reaction when you joined the party.

Aww, Clive reuniting with his uncle is really cute! I was expecting Clive to prove his identity with Phoenix magic; I wasn't prepared for him to adorably re-enact his teenage theatrics.

It's good to see Jill getting some focus on her own feelings, rather than just being there to support Clive! She's spent a lot of this game feeling more like part of the backdrop than like a real, present character, so I'm glad it looks like she might get a storyline of her own.

I love this mechanic where widows who've developed a big crush on me from rumours of my exploits can send me presents. Not enough games have 'strangers develop parasocial relationships with you' as a feature.
