Still tearing through How to Get Away with Murder! I'm up to the end of season four.
I like the detail that the Keating kids have all ended up struggling academically because it's hard to concentrate when, you know, your mind is constantly on the various murders you've committed and/or covered up.
I was slightly unhappy that Connor didn't seem fucked up by Wes's death, and I'm delighted by the revelation that he was in fact so fucked up by it that he was forced to feign emotionlessness. Perfect.
The entirety of episode 3.14 was extremely up my street, in fact. Lots of emotional distress, and Laurel finally starting to take steps to reconcile with people.
I evidently ship Connor/Oliver more than I thought, because I had such a powerful 'how FUCKING DARE you' reaction to Connor's dad trying to talk Connor into leaving Oliver. Oliver is one of the very few things to give your son any joy!
Series four gives us the smallest amount of What Happened That Day information to date before we actually hit That Day, and watching That Day was incredibly stressful.
Simon tripping over a chair and accidentally shooting himself in the head: incredible, magnificent. Excellent source of trauma for all involved and also darkly hilarious.
The scene with Laurel in the lift was hard to watch, though. That was harrowing.
This show rockets constantly between drama that delights me and drama that distresses me, and I never know what's around the next corner. It's interesting to learn how I respond to different events in fiction. Simon accidentally shooting himself: great! Simon getting deported: awful! Spur-of-the-moment murders are fun; premeditated murders are upsetting. The kids trying to steal files from Michaela's workplace is far more stressful than the kids trying to dispose of corpses.
I really like the way the show conveys This Is The Day The Fucked-Up Thing Happens by filtering those scenes in a particular way. I also like the general structure of each season: 'something fucked-up is going to happen', eight episodes of buildup, the fucked-up thing happens, six episodes of fallout.
