Let's Give Them Something To Stare At.

Riona: Maybe I'll rewatch Sense8 or something. I'll open Netflix.
Netflix: Hey, want to watch a show about five teenagers who get sent to detention together and then there's a murder?
Riona: Yes? Yes. Yes, obviously.

And that's how our household ended up watching One of Us Is Lying.

I got so invested in the little group of teen murder suspects (canonically called Murder Club) at the centre of the story. Bonding over a murder! Slowly getting attached while not being entirely sure whether they can trust each other! My favourite thing!

The best scene is all the murder suspects dancing together in front of everyone at prom, knowing it'll just add fuel to the theory that they all committed the murder together. It's so joyful and so weird. It's perfect.

The trouble with Janae/Maeve is that I ship Janae much more with Addy, so I've got no room to get invested in this. I really thought Janae/Addy might happen! Alas.

I love Murder Club as a whole, but Addy 'Good Heart, Bad Decisions' Prentiss is probably my favourite member. I loved her freezing up while Simon was dying; it was such a believable response. She's got a great dynamic with Cooper, too; he's probably my second favourite.

Jake is handled a bit oddly. For the most part, he seems basically fine - not substantially more obnoxious than I'd expect for his age - but people keep telling us he's an arsehole, and then at the end he turns out to be the villain. Either let us think he's an okay guy, so we go 'wow, didn't see that coming' at the twist, or show us him being an arsehole, so we go 'ah, yes, that makes sense' at the twist! 'He acts mostly okay, but everyone keeps saying he's an arsehole' is such a strange middle ground, and somehow makes the twist feel both less surprising and less logical.

(Can't believe it turned out that none of them were lying. I mean, yes, they were all lying about various things, but I feel slightly outraged that this show pasted the title 'ONE OF US IS LYING' over Murder Club as they watched Simon die and it turned out that none of them did it.)

The twist did lead to a great outcome, though. I love that Murder Club actually ended up committing a murder. Beautiful.

Of course, I'm shipping Janae/Addy even more now that they've killed someone together.

Overall, One of Us Is Lying was an enjoyable show! It wasn't anything life-changing, but it was entertainingly twisty and the concept catered very strongly to my tastes. I'll probably watch the second series.

one of us is lying, first impressions
