It's Self-Aware, So It Can Suffer.

I'm really enjoying Horizon Forbidden West! Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the best games I've ever played, even if I never really got into the fandom; I'm excited to be delving into the sequel.

I'm sad that Nil probably won't be in this game, though. I want my murder friend.

(I refused to fight Nil to the death in Zero Dawn, and he was extremely upset about it. Later, he showed up for the final battle and said, 'The wound you gave me kept catching on my ribs, but if one of us had died there we would have missed this opportunity for LOADS OF MURDER' and Aloy said, 'Nil, you're really making it difficult to be glad to see you.' When I talked to him again, he asked, 'Killed anyone lately you'd like to talk about?' He's so weird. I love him.)

I'm not very far into Forbidden West - I'm partway through the first story quest after you get to the Forbidden West itself - and my notes aren't really spoilery, but I'll put them under a cut for the benefit of anyone who wants to come to this game completely fresh.

Two minutes into Forbidden West, and I want Aloy and Elisabet to make out.

I love getting to see the people of this very different far-future society looking back at our society, trying to learn how it worked, trying to understand it. Also delighted by the contrast between Aloy's 'oh, another one of these' and Varl's 'WHAT IS THAT AND IS IT GOING TO HIT US' reactions to holograms.

Ooh, sounds like Far Zenith might have an APOLLO backup! Are we going to find it? I was heartbroken to learn that APOLLO had been lost in Zero Dawn.

The character animation in conversations is so much better than it was in Zero Dawn. I'm impressed. It makes them a lot more interesting to watch.

I don't know why I'm stealing the lenses from these watchtowers, but by God I'm going to steal them all.

I spoke to a random NPC, and he asked, 'Do you just interrupt everyone you meet, or am I a special case?'

I would like to be able to stroke my robotic mount and I think it's outrageous that I can't. I made the mistake of getting emotionally attached and spending all my shards on repairs.

I DID NOT REALISE BURROWERS COULD SWIM and I nearly shat myself when one came after me in the water.

I can appreciate Erend as a sad disaster, but I can't accept Aloy/Erend being the biggest Horizon pairing when he has such terrible facial hair.

Everyone who's in love with Aloy needs to form some sort of club. Or possibly there should be two separate clubs, one for all the sad boys and one for all the flirty girls; I think that covers the main categories of people who are attracted to Aloy.

I love that Aloy has absolutely no time for anybody's shit.

Glad to see Erend and Varl actually following my 'form a club' advice.

I thought at first that this game didn't have Zero Dawn's dynamic day/night cycle, but it turns out it just doesn't activate until you reach the Forbidden West. I knew the sun set in the west; I didn't realise it set exclusively in the west.

Sylens absolutely thinks he's the protagonist of this game.

I saw something bright green as I was out for a (real-life) walk, and a part of my mind genuinely went 'oh, it's greenshine silver, you should collect it!' before I realised it was a green bottle cap and greenshine silver doesn't exist.
