I loved all the great discussion on my post about
scary videogame moments! I'm still slowly working my way through the comments, so I apologise for all the late responses.
For now, here's some rambling about Bravely Default II! I'm in chapter... four, I think? I've just reached Holograd.
I can't believe Prince Castor betrayed us! I was deeply shocked. I thought we bonded, Castor! I thought we taught you to respect the common man!
To be honest, I'm not feeling especially positive about the survival odds of any future guest party members.
I like that everyone else has a clear goal in their travels and Seth's motivation is just 'shrug, I'm already dead, might as well assist the princess who helped me out'.
Elvis is friends with a couple! I feel that's something we don't see that often in fiction, despite how common it is in life.
Interesting to see laid-back, affable Elvis experiencing severe distress and fury during the Wiswald plot. And I love his conversation with the Crystal, from his 'oh, my turn for cool powers!' initial reaction to 'yeah, I've got goals of my own, but obviously I'll drop them in an instant if a friend needs my help'.
I was going 'why is Seth the only one who can see the ghost?' and then remembered that OH YEAH, SETH IS DEAD.
My favourite boss strategy is to go in with three vanguards and a white mage, then Neo Cross Slash everything to oblivion. It hasn't failed me yet. Some enemies counter physical attacks, yes, but it's worth the risk when you're dealing that much damage!
Martha's great. I love how thrown Seth is when she starts flirting. And it's nice that you get one of the Asterisks after a friendly fight!
Of course, Martha's actually into Adelle. Sorry, Seth.
I cracked up at Elvis's '?????' expression when Adelle turned out to be a fairy.
Aww, Adelle was afraid we'd run away when she revealed herself!
Can't believe characters won't play cards with me when there's a crisis going on. Outrageous.
Don't kill Gladys! She had such a good character design! Such interesting potential for guilt and redemption! Plus she gave me one of my favourite Asterisks; I'm a huge fan of being able to Brave out fully and do eight attacks in a row.
Galahad: I'm here to see my sister!
Riona: Is there... is there any chance at all that your sister wasn't Gladys?
But of course Bravely Default II had to go with the most depressing option. I'm enjoying this game, but it's a bit miserable sometimes.
Adelle trying to find a way to help Gloria enjoy herself for once is very sweet. (And then they paint Seth! And Gloria's enthusiastic about the prospect of a landscape-painting competition next! I love it.)
'I can't believe you're an amazing artist on top of everything else.' Seth's so taken with Gloria. It's pretty cute.
Don't have Elvis say Gloria has 'a face that could brighten even the darkest day' and then end the scene before showing Gloria's reaction! I demand flustered Gloria.
I'm impressed that Elvis somehow managed to say that without sounding sleazy. From Ringabel, that comment would have made me shudder. When Elvis says it, it doesn't feel like he has ulterior motives; he's just complimenting a friend.
I like Lonsdale! I hope we don't end up killing him.
why won't anyone in Holograd play cards with me :(
I mean, I realise it's the seat of the evil empire, but surely people still like to have fun here.
I really like that Elvis says, 'Right, let's sort this mess out' when his turn comes around and a couple of party members are unconscious. (And then he did, in fact, sort that mess out!)
I keep thinking I hear Elvis say, 'Ooh, right in the cervix!' when he lands a good hit on an enemy. That's... probably not what he's saying? That's probably not what he's saying.
Wait, it's probably 'soft bits'! It took me fifty-seven hours of hearing 'right in the cervix', but I got there in the end.
