My Contrition Completely Dwarfs The Impending Apocalypse.

I'm still working my way slowly through Buffy the Vampire Slayer! I've just finished season four of Buffy and season one of Angel.

For indirectly pandemic-related reasons, it's taken over a year to watch these two seasons, so I've been struggling to keep track of the storyline, but I've still been able to appreciate the character moments.

For example, in 'Parting Gifts': Cordelia kissed Angel and Angel was bewildered by it! Yessssssss. I always enjoy kisses happening for non-romantic reasons in fiction; they've got such great potential to haunt the characters involved.

It's extremely cute that Angel makes breakfast for the office, particularly when he can't eat it himself.

Odd to see Bill Cipher carved into a man's chest on Buffy.

Angel seems genuinely fond of Cordelia and genuinely concerned when she's suffering. And he calls himself her family! I'm really enjoying their relationship.

Angel finding Cordelia after Faith attacks her! I'm definitely shipping Angel/Cordelia more sincerely than I should.

I really liked Angel and Faith's fight deteriorating until he's just holding her when she cries.

Spike startling Giles while he's playing the guitar: delightful.

The final episode of Buffy season four captures the experience of dreaming in a way I've never seen fiction manage before. I'm impressed.

Angel season one finale: I definitely had some strong feelings at Angel's 'I need you back' to the unaware Cordelia. Again, I'm touched by how genuinely he likes her, when in many ways she's not an easy person to like.

(He didn't think he had any attachment to life! But he cares so much about her! My heart!)

At the start of Buffy, if you'd told me that Angel and Cordelia's relationship was the aspect of this universe I'd end up most invested in, I would have been so confused.

I'm still constantly surprised by how much I like Angel as a character. Pretty much my only character-related expectations before I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer were 'I'm probably going to like Giles and be bored by Angel'.

I do like Giles! But I love Angel. The one character I was actively expecting to dislike, and he's perhaps my favourite character in the Buffyverse. Awkward and self-loathing and perfect. Angel is a delightful loser and it's a privilege to watch him skulking about.
