Who Do I Gotta Punch In The Face?

As evidence that I can still talk about things that aren't Persona, here's another entry on the new Higurashi anime! I've seen up to episode eighteen, but this entry only contains spoilers up to episode sixteen.

Higurashi continues to be the goriest, most distressing series about the power of friendship I've ever experienced. It's like a blood-drenched My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

I got slightly emotional watching everyone band together to help Satoko in Tataridamashi. Higurashi is a story full of people doing terrible things, but there's so much compassion and faith in humanity at the heart of it.

Higurashi is so consistent and so determined in its 'murder won't solve your problems' message. Thank you, Higurashi; I'll take it to heart.

Holy shit, episode thirteen (the end of the Tataridamashi arc) is devastating. I was almost in tears when it hit the credits.

And then the opening of episode fourteen, when we see Ooishi attack the festival, was even worse!

Episode fourteen, and the introduction of the blade that can kill a looping person, made me fear a little for the overall tone of this anime; I really wanted it to keep the original Higurashi's hope and compassion and determination in the midst of darkness.

I've been reassured slightly by episode sixteen, though. (You know, after the hideously lengthy sequence of someone having their intestines pulled out.) It's good to see Rika remember that, hey, sometimes you're not getting horribly murdered, and it's important to appreciate those moments and have a good time with your friends.

I'm curious about whether this series is going to make Rika/Satoko canon; it seems to be leaning very heavily in that direction!

I really loved the original Higurashi visual novel series, but the ending didn't quite click for me because it drifted away slightly from the central group of kids, the characters I was actually invested in. This anime seems to be maintaining a very strong focus on the kids so far, so I'm hoping it keeps it up!

I'll be delighted if this series gives me an ending I'm more satisfied with on top of all the new content, but we'll see. Either way, I'm glad to have more Higurashi!

I haven't mentioned how effective the ending credits sequence is (NB: contains some disturbing imagery), but I really, really love it. The symbolism of Rika desperately trying to tear off the calendar page. The lovely shots of their friendship at the start, and then the way the music kicks up a notch just as it hits that haunting image of Satoko and her uncle.
