That Is An Outrageous Claim.

A moment in Death Note that amused me:

Misa: Oh, yeah, Light, do you know how to kill a shinigami?
Light: You're already calling me by my first name?
Misa: Then could I call you Knight instead? Because you're like Misa's knight in shining armour.
Light: Light is fine.

It's easy to overlook Misa's intelligence, but she is very good at achieving her goals. Grabbing Kira's attention and managing to set up a secret meeting with him, even though her only way of communicating with him was through channels that the police had access to? Getting evidence on Higuchi? She's reckless and easily manipulated, it's true, but I think she's smarter than she's given credit for.

I'm sort of amazed by how faithful an adaptation of the manga the Death Note anime is. Not only do the art styles match, but scenes are often shot-for-shot identical.

Light is imprisoned for over a month with his ankles bound together, his hands tied behind his back, and no memory of being Kira. He hasn't been told that the killings have started again. As far as he knows, he's an innocent man who offered to be held under observation to clear his name, but the killings stopped when he was imprisoned, making him look guilty. The inside of his head must be such a mess.

And then Light and L are handcuffed together for over two months!

Episode twenty-five of Death Note, 'Silence', is so strange and stylish and interesting. Just brilliantly directed, which isn't something I often find myself thinking about an anime episode. The quiet montage of deaths and snapshots of lifespans while Misa sings. The moment L asks Light a difficult question and the sound of the rain cuts out. The shot from beneath their feet, looking up through the grate at the falling rain.

Although, as I mentioned, the anime is a direct adaptation of the manga almost shot-for-shot, the rooftop conversation in the rain and the foot massage afterwards were added for the anime. I think they're both very strong additions. I just love this weird intimacy between two characters when one of them is in the process of murdering the other.

(Rei was in the room for the foot massage scene, saw it completely out of context and spent the entire scene going 'WHAT, WHAT, IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING')

It's very striking that, after Light's conflicted acceptance of L's weirdly intimate foot massage offer, Light reciprocates the weird intimacy by taking up a towel and drying L's face. I think it's the only time in the entire series we see Light reaching out to another person in a way that doesn't feel calculated. He's killed L already; he's laid the groundwork, his plan is in motion. And, with L about to stop breathing, Light can afford to have this strangely human moment with him.

Why did L build a twenty-two-storey building for the Kira investigation when only six people are investigating? This has been bothering me for weeks.
