I activated my Amazon Prime free trial to get a quick delivery, then went 'huh, I suppose that means I've got Amazon Prime video access for a month; maybe I'll try out The 100 at last.' (I saw a trailer when it first started and thought it looked promisingly full of teenagers making bad decisions.)
I'm four episodes in. I wouldn't say I'm invested yet, but it's holding my interest so far.
I was only half-paying attention when Charlotte attacked Wells; I was going 'well, Wells is obviously an incredibly important character, he'll fight her off and be fine.' And then I realised he wasn't fine and I was incredibly confused! He was second only to Clarke in my expectations of character survival, and he died in episode three.
Damn it, I liked Wells. I was looking forward to seeing more of his friendship with Clarke, now that they'd repaired their relationship.
It's sort of hilarious to me that the ending of episode four very dramatically goes 'oh, no, Finn is CHEATING on his COOL SPACE GIRLFRIEND he fully and reasonably expects never to see again.' It's hard to work up too much concern over the romantic drama when it's set against a backdrop of 'they have to contact the Ark or humanity will be extinct in months.'
Well, I suppose the Hundred will still be alive, but I don't have great feelings about their prospects for carrying on the human race, given that there are only a hundred of them, their knowledge of farming and medical care is limited on account of the fact they're all under eighteen, and 5% of them died in the first couple of weeks.
I'm having trouble pinning down any of the characters in my head; the one I've got the clearest impression of so far is actually Clarke's mother (practical, determined, smart, ruthless). Clarke herself is generally pretty sensible and tries to look after people, but she's also got an angry, unforgiving streak (I was pleased to realise that; I wasn't sure how interesting she'd be when I thought her character was just 'sensible and compassionate'). Bellamy is a power-hungry dick with a soft spot for kids (I suppose that soft spot makes sense, given that he's got a younger sister). Murphy is a power-hungry dick with no soft spot for kids to make Bellamy look better in comparison. Finn was introduced as LOOK AT THIS RECKLESS FOOL and then the show forgot that entirely and went 'no actually this guy is also just sensible and compassionate.' Octavia is... rebellious? Monty and Jasper are bros (but not dudebros! An important distinction. They're endearing, nerdy bros). I suppose they'll probably become more fleshed out as the show goes along, or possibly they'll all unexpectedly get stabbed in the neck in episode five.
Typing that out has made me realise that Clarke's mother is the best character, so it's a shame she's probably about to be executed. Although she's already been sentenced to be executed once. It'd be great if she got sentenced to execution and then got saved at the last moment every few episodes.
Speaking of post-apocalyptic canons: I'm highly unlikely to write Horizon Zero Dawn fanfiction, but if I did it'd be fanfiction where the Zero Dawn team live for decades in the bunker, increasingly losing their minds.
