I Don't Understand Why He'd Try To Kill Me When He's So Hot.

Episode fifteen of Full Moon wo Sagashite (or Japannah Montana, if you prefer) was thoroughly delightful. 'Characters accidentally falling on top of each other, OH NO, and staring in shock into each other's eyes for aaaaages' is a cliché I usually roll my eyes at, but I loved the hell out of it here. Possibly because it happened with a couple I actually 'ship, for once. Even though I probably shouldn't.

(th_esaurus caught a bit of Full Moon wo Sagashite and objected on the grounds that it was far too cute for a series about a terminally ill child. I can't really argue with that. ('Why is there an... angel bunny lady? And a guy with cat ears?' 'Oh, they're gods of death.' 'NO THEY'RE NOT.'))

And then I watched episode seventeen (and later eighteen). I'm going to let my e-mail conversation with th_esaurus express my thoughts on this:

Riona: There is a small but distinct possibility that my newfound inappropriately cute death god/Japannah Montana OTP are father and daughter.

why

RD: BUT THEY HAD A DOKI DOKI ALMOST KISS MOMENT

Riona: I'M CLINGING ONTO THAT. I'M HOPING THAT THEY WOULDN'T HAVE HAD THAT SCENE IF THEY WERE BLOOD RELATIONS, BUT YOU NEVER KNOW WITH ANIME.

RD: what leads you to suspect

considering he is a magical death cat and she is cancer montana

Riona: It's previously arisen that he was formerly a human. He remembers that he was a musician, but nothing else of his life before he died. In the last episode I saw, magical death bunny told him that he and Cancer Montana were somehow related (FINGERS CROSSED SHE DOESN'T MEAN THIS IN THE FAMILIAL SENSE) and that if he keeps hanging around her he might get his memories of his human life back, which is apparently dangerous for a shinigami.

The only dead man connected to Cancer Montana we know of is her father. Who was a musician.

Please don't be father and daughter, guys.

RD:

i hate to break it to you but he's her dad yo.

Riona: whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

(After episode eighteen:)

Riona: In another classic anime cliché, magical death cat found Our Heroine unconscious and gave her what I think was supposed to be the kiss of life but looked like it was pretty much just a kiss, and then there was awkward wondering on both sides about whether that counted as her first kiss or not.

He - he's not going to turn out to be her father, right? I genuinely can't tell with things from Japan.

RD: OKAY that makes me less certain.

WHAT ABOUT EICHI-KUN

Riona: WHAT ABOUT EICHI-KUN? HE'S BEEN IN AMERICA FOR TWO YEARS; OUR HEROINE HAS HAD NO CONTACT WITH HIM. SCREW EICHI-KUN. RUN OFF WITH THE WEIRD CAT DEATH GOD WHO IS HOPEFULLY NOT YOUR FATHER.

(Our Heroine called magical death cat 'Eichi-kun' as she was recovering from unconsciousness post-kiss of life (clearly just kiss of kiss) and he wasn't very impressed.)

Riona: (By 'screw' I mean 'forget about'.)

RD: i'm not cool with this anime.

I've finally managed to pin down a pattern in my 'shipping habits: I've got a big weakness for cynics and the idealists who make them a little less cynical. It doesn't explain every pairing I love, but Rogue/Logan, Annie/Jeff, Naegi/Ikusaba (...maybe) and Mitsuki/Takuto (I'm not sure whether Takuto is exactly a cynic, but he certainly looks like one next to Mitsuki) all fall into this pattern. Come to think of it, Satoshi/Daisuke and the Ninth Doctor/Rose Tyler - two of my earliest 'ships - do as well.

I'm going to say it's a coincidence that most of these pairings I love have massive age differences; cynical characters tend to be written as older than idealistic ones, after all. I hope it's a coincidence that most of these pairings have massive age differences.

rd is amazing, conversational adventures, weird pairings, early warning signs of obsession, full moon wo sagashite
