"Er, hello?" Fluttershy cleared her throat. "Anyone? You seem to have left your...block." It was a very pretty block, with lovely pink hearts on the side. It was just sitting there in the middle of the clearing, with no sign of anyone leaving it there.

Fluttershy decided to ask...Applejack to ask around.

---

"No one's lost anything like that. I'll keep an ear out in case anyone mentions anything. In the meantime, I could carry it off and stick it in my barn or something so it's out of your way."

"Oh, no need," said Fluttershy. "I don't mind. It gives me a place to put the bird seed so it doesn't get mixed up with the squirrel food. It's very convenient." And something about the box made her feel good. Maybe it was the pink hearts, or maybe the way it just sat there, quietly, waiting to make itself useful. Every time she saw it in the clearing, she smiled.

"It's no trouble." Applejack scooped it up on her back. "I'll just pack it up."

"Oh, please don't!" It was only a shout compared to Fluttershy's normal voice, but it made Applejack pause.

"You really like this thing? Well, here is as good of a place as any for it, I guess." Applejack set it down. "Let me know if you change your mind."

---

"Hello, little friends." Fluttershy looked around. "And hello to you." She wasn't sure when she'd started saying hello to the block, but it felt right. Every time she spoke to it, she had a warm feeling coming off it, almost like it was pleased. "Now there's a Whistling Hummingbird coming, and she's very rare and shy, and she's really shy, so we'll have to be very quiet." She set down the bird feeder on the corner of the block. "Of course, I don't have to tell you that." She giggled, then settled down for the wait.

After ten minutes, the squirrels got bored and left, and after an hour, even Angel had hopped off. But Fluttershy waited, and so did the block.

And two hours later, even though the only sound in the clearing was faint whistling, Fluttershy was there to watch.

And so was the block.

---

"Twilight? Er, if you don't mind, would you be able to do me a favor? Maybe just one teeny-tiny spell?"

"That should be okay," Twilight said. "What kind of spell?"

"Well, there's this...block, and I really like it, and if there's some kind of magic that could make it able to float around so I could keep it with me, that would be really nice. If it's not too much trouble."

"Yeah, I could do that. A simple levitation spell. But are you sure you want a block floating around with you everywhere?"

"I'm sure."

---

"This is so nice," Fluttershy said as the block floated through the door. "I was wishing you could come over. And I didn't want to think of you being left out in the rain."

There was a noise soft enough that most ponies wouldn't have believed they'd heard it, let alone paid any attention. But Fluttershy was good at listening to quiet things.

She smiled at the block. "That's very sweet of you, but it's no trouble having you here."

---

"Don't you guys think it's weird that she's taking that box everywhere?" Rainbow Dash asked. "I mean it's just a box. It doesn't do anything. What's so exciting about that?"

Twilight shrugged. "She likes it."

"She talks to it."

"Well yeah," said Pinky Pie. "It'd be rude to ignore it."

Rainbow Dash stared at Pinky. "You're not arguing with rocks again, are you?"

"What are you two talking about?" Rarity asked.

"Nothing," said Pinky.

"Fluttershy's mystery box."

"Yes, it is rather odd. I mean it's a good color for her, but as far as accessories go, it's too large and chunky to entirely suit her."

"It's probably a phase," said Twilight. "She'll be really into it for a while, and then relax and stop talking it around as much. Just give it a few months."

---

A few months later:

"As my best friends, I wanted to share something important with you. My dear Companion Cube has asked me to marry it, and I said yes!" Fluttershy finished with an excited squeak.

No one knew what to say.

Well, almost no one.

"Yaaaaaaaaaaay!" said Pinky. "Can I be the wedding planner?"

This is, surprisingly, my first time writing magical talking pony/box with hearts on it.

Oh, Pinkie. Of course her only concern is whether she can plan the party.

She's already trying to work out whether cube-shaped wedding cake would be cute or unsettling.

Well, on the one hand, it is a very easy shape to sculpt, on the other hand, it would be a bit like eating a cake shaped like a baby.

Rarity's a bit unsettled, but soon she's going to be put in charge of dressing the bride and...other prospective spouse, and she'll be much more enthusiastic.

It's the challenge of a lifetime for Rarity.

And once they get Twilight to help organize, that's four of the Mane Six agreeing this is a good idea.

Applejack can cater. Honestly, it's really only Rainbow Dash that will be the problem- she's seen firsthand what can happen when one of her friends gets too attached to an inanimate object.

Yeah, I think she's going to see pretty much anything along these lines as the same as Pinkie Pie's party in Crazytown.

And unfortunately, she probably won't be as easily distracted as she was during Shining Armor and Cadance's wedding, what with, you know, actually knowing the bride.

Yeah, and she's really big on protecting Fluttershy, so if she gets the sense that this in anyway counts as bad things happening to Fluttershy, she is not going to let it go.

And everyone dismisses it as Rainbow Dash just being untrusting, but honestly, bad things are coming from this, guys!

She's going to be the one to find bout about GLaDOS, but she's going to mistakenly confuse the Companion Cube is working with GLaDOS. (No, brain, no! I've already written Fluttershy/Companion Cube, I do not need to come up with extra plot to make it longer and more complicated!)

Does it not? (Don't listen to her, brain! She totally needs extra plot!)
