'But Tail Whip Doesn't Even Do Damage!'

One of the things I very much like about Death Note is the fact that, whilst there is a huge number of rules for the use of the Note, many of them do not actually come into play in the story. The Death Note seems much more like a real object if not all of its rules exist for the convenience of the narrative. Not that I want Death Notes to exist, of course; I just think it's a nice touch.

I haven't really talked about how Light would fare in Silent Hill, have I? (I initially mistyped that as 'Silent Gill', which is obviously the world's most horrific fishtank, containing dead coral, cloudy water and a tentacled Pyramid Head.) The problem is Light's lack of remorse; he always believes that he is doing the right thing, so how can he feel guilt?

OH, WAIT, I'VE GOT IT.

The innocent, no-memories-of-the-Death-Note Light can go to Silent Hill! There, after many an attack from monsters that mysteriously resemble now-dead criminals and possibly stumbling across Naomi Misora's perfectly preserved body hanging from a gallows, he will slowly come to realise that he is Kira before actually regaining his memories related to the Death Note, and so there will be the conflict for which I was so desperately hoping and which the canon sadly failed to provide.

In the canon, Light regains his memories all at once and completely, with all the associated reasoning and justification and godhood aspirations, and so he can look back on his innocent self merely as a perfectly-executed part of his plan, with no more conflict than he would feel when manipulating anyone else. If the innocent Light were to work out that he was Kira by himself, however, without re-experiencing the line of thought that led to his becoming Kira, I imagine he would be horrified. He's viewed Kira's murders from the other side, now. He's seen what the suspicion that Light might be Kira has done to his father. He would probably object to the fact that he is essentially being used as a pawn in his own game, Kira having become him with the intention of leading the innocent Light to wipe out his beliefs and ideals and reassume his role as Kira later.

The final boss in the innocent Light's Silent Hill, of course, would be Light-as-Kira himself, trying to seduce the innocent Light back to his unremembered stance of 'one with the power to kill has the duty to use it to improve the world (and also we could be a terrifying god on Earth, which would be pretty awesome)'.

LOOK, IT IS THE OBVIOUS SYMBOLIC ROUTE; I AM NOT SUGGESTING THIS JUST BECAUSE I WANT LIGHT TO HAVE SEXUAL TENSION WITH HIMSELF. Although I will confess that 'hey, Light could have sexual tension with himself!' forms quite a large part of my reasoning.

Hang on: isn't Light chained to L for more or less the entire duration of his innocence? Does this mean that Light and L would be in Silent Hill together? I suppose Silent Hill would be able to break the chain if it wanted to, but having L and Light handcuffed together in Silent Hill whilst Light discovers who he is could actually be really interesting. I don't know exactly what I'd do with the idea, but there's obviously the potential for something there.

Alternatively, perhaps Light is actually responsible for Silent Hill. Perhaps, when he is particularly disgusted by somebody's actions, he writes '[name]. Suicide. Comes to Silent Hill; experiences vivid guilty hallucinations; commits suicide after eleven days. Perceives death as the result of a monster attack.' It would explain a great deal.

In conclusion, a Death Note and Silent Hill crossover could work very well indeed. Here is a concept that almost certainly wouldn't:

The Pokémon whose name is written in this note shall faint.

two opposing tags: fight!, silent hill, fanfiction, crossovers, weird pairings, pokémon, death note, should never be written ever, someone should probably write that
