Linux Poll

Quick poll:

If you were to recommend to me a live distrobution of Linux what would it be? At the moment I'm trying to get something to run on a virtual hard drive using Virtual PC 2007 on my laptop. I tried installing Scientific Linux on the hard drive (about 4 times) as well as boot the liveCD version of Scientific Linux, but I can't get the graphical interface to come up. I'm taking this to mean that either 1) I am Linux illiterate (which I am, I'll admit, though I'm not completely alien to it really) or 2) I just need to allot the virtual computer some more RAM (currently it's set to 256).

Some years ago I got Knoppix to work on my desktop just to fiddle around with and somewhere I do have cds full of Mandrake install files (not that I know where they are...). My experience in the school environment with Linux has been RedHat (mostly working with IRAF) and though it's not exactly the same I did spend a semester working on the SunLab computers (which run Unix, I think) and will be working on them again this semester for my Stellar Atmospheres class. I did have Quantian (sp?) a math oriented LiveDVD distrobution working on Virtual PC, but there was also something weird with the graphics going on.

At the moment I'm considering Slax or Knoppix (and will probably download both). But other suggestions and opinions are sought and appreciated.
Rin.
