It's expensive. Right outside D.C., so the traffic is terrible. Great shopping and the metro in D.C. is good, though, so as long as you're not driving and you're making a lot of money, it's a nice place to live. As long as you don't mind cities, that is. I used to live in D.C. and I enjoy the area, but it's the worst traffic I've ever seen, barring possibly L.A. and New York.
Well it's been about a decade since I lived there, but I probably wouldn't want to try to live *in* Alexandria for less than, say, $65K a year. Of course it's possible to live further out and commute, but again...commuting in that area. Oy. Plenty of people live on less in DC, but with dogs that's going to limit your housing options. Alexandria itself is very expensive, rent-wise. Further out gets a little more reasonable, but it's still the DC suburbs, and it's always going to be expensive compared to other places.
