Monkey Sox Meme Day 2: The 1st character you fell in love with/became obsessed with

“Johnny! Johnny, look this way!”

A flash nearly blinded him, if he hadn’t been looking slightly to the left of the photographer, it might have. As it was, he saw spots.

“Lieutenant Gage! Give us a smile!”

What was it with these people? You’d think he was a movie star or something, there were at least two dozen cameras pointed at him, and another three network news reporters with microphones in hand and and video cameras in tow. There were people crowding the walkway leading up to the door of the governor’s mansion.

“You need to stop and talk to them,” Roy fell into step beside him and leaned in to whisper. “Man of the hour and all that.”

“You were there too,” Johnny said, smiling and giving Lacey Lindsey from LA Nightly a wave. He recognized her from TV, from watching her almost every evening on the television at the station. And she was bouncing up and down, calling his name, trying to get HIS attention! It was surreal and bizarre.

Roy patted him on the shoulder. “I didn’t save the world. You did. Go talk to Lacey Lindsey. My wife likes her; it’ll make her happy to see someone she knows talking to her. And see if you can get a picture with her and maybe an autograph, made out to Joanne.”

“You’re as bad as everyone else here.” Johnny went over to the reporter anyway, with Roy a few steps behind.

“Lieutenant Gage, hi. Could I get a few words with you before you go in to see the governor?” Lacey flashed him a brilliant smile and he nodded, hoping he didn’t look really stupid.

She nodded to her cameraman and then spoke into her microphone. “This is Lacey Lindsey, here with hero firefighter, Lieutenant Johnny Gage of the Los Angeles fire department. A few days ago, Lieutenant Gage foiled an attempt by an unknown group to set off a bomb here in LA, which would have resulted in the deaths of thousands. On behalf of the other residents of Los Angeles, let me thank you, for that, Lieutenant.”

People started applauding and Johnny was sure he was blushing. “Just doing my job, ma’am. My partner and the other guys from Engine Company 51 were all part of the situation, none of us act alone out there.”

“So gracious. How did you know something odd was going on?”

He glanced over at Roy who shook his head slightly and cut a hand across his throat. He turned back to the reporter. “I’m afraid I can’t really go into details about the case, it is still under investigation.” He smiled to soften the blow of the refusal to answer. He concentrated on Lacey’s pretty smile, trying to ignore the camera filming them. He typically didn’t do well with cameras.

“I understand. Well, I’m sure our viewers want to know how your recovery is going. I see you’re on crutches, and the initial reports said you had some considerably bad burns.”

He winced at the reminder, which made his side itch under the bandages. “I’m doing okay now. Our friends at Rampart General patched me up pretty well.” He smirked at her. “Usually, when I’m working and we go over there, they toss us out before I can flirt with the nurses, but I got to spend three whole days there, with their undivided attention.”

“Johnny, they’re waiting at the door there for us,” Roy said quietly, touching his arm, carefully avoiding the bandages he knew were hidden under Johnny’s shirt.

“Thank you for stopping, Lieutenant,” Lacey said. “Congratulations on the Governor’s award.”

As the video camera was set down by Lacey’s cameraman, Johnny cleared his throat. “Uh, Lacey, this is my partner, Roy, his wife is a big fan, do you think we could get a picture?”

She smiled broadly. “I’d be happy to! I’m so pleased to meet you, Lieutenant Roy Desoto, isn’t it?”

Johnny rolled his eyes as Roy practically melted under the attention as he handed off his camera and they posed with the reporter. Apparently, Joanne wasn’t the only fan in the family.
