“Hey, Rinks, got a minute?” Evan called as I walked past his open office door on my way to see Chuck.

I backed up and went in. “Sure, what’s up?” Belatedly, I added, “Sir.”

He waved at me and shook his head. I was friends with his boyfriend, and that had led to being friends with him too, even though he was my CO. I was in on their secret, though the rumor mill said that kind of secret might not need to remain so for much longer, if the law changed.

“Something is up with David. He won’t talk to me about it. I was hoping maybe you could get something out of him. He’s been acting weird and spending a lot of extra time in the greenhouse. I haven’t seen him in three days; he’s been avoiding me because we argued about it.”

I’d planned to have lunch with Chuck, if he was free, but I could check on David. I hadn’t seen him in a while. I realized he had cancelled our last two Wednesday lunches, so it was over two weeks since we had spoken. “I’ll see if he’ll come to lunch.”

Lorne gave me a grateful look. “Thanks. See if you can convince him to talk to me.”

I had to search through four greenhouses to find my friend and I was getting cranky. “David! Come on, where the hell are you?”

“Back here!” Finally, an answer, I headed towards the muffled voice.

He was sitting in a planting bed between two huge alien looking fern-like plants. When he looked up at me, he had a really goofy expression on his face. “Hi!”

“Hi! Whatcha doing?”

“Nothing. Just sitting here.”

Oh, something wasn’t right here. I crouched down in front of him and pushed his hair out of his eyes. His eyes were rolling in his head. He gave every appearance of being drunk, or stoned. “Aren’t you supposed to be working on the Athosian seedling project?”

He fluttered a hand airily. “Oh, yeah. I planted them. I guess I’ll make some notes. I can do it later.”

“What did you eat today, buddy?” His words were ever so slightly slurred, which only someone familiar with David’s normal speech patterns would have noticed.

Shrugging, he reached back and rubbed one of the purplish-red fern leaves between his fingers. The way he did it set off alarms in my head. “What kind of plants are these?”

“Hibolian ferns, aren’t they cool?”

“How long have you had them here?”

“Oh, about two weeks. We got them when AR-3 went to Hibol.”

I stood up and tapped my radio as I walked a short distance from Parrish. “Sergeant Tur to Major Lorne.”

“Go ahead.”

“Hibolian ferns. I think we have a problem. You want to come to greenhouse four and check it out before I call medical in?”

“On my way.” Lorne clicked off and I went back to David.

I crouched down and asked him, “David, you want to go have some lunch?”

“Nah, I’m good.”

“So, what’s so special about the Hibolian ferns?”

He was so stoned. I was surprised he was sitting up straight. It seemed to take forever for him to answer dreamily, “They’re pretty. If you listen, they kinda sing to you.” He leaned his cheek against a fern frond. Yup, I think we had found the culprit. There was no way I was getting near those plants. I got up and walked around, but there only seemed to be the two huge ferns.

David had left a datapad on the walkway beside the planting bed. I picked it up and started scanning for information on the ferns. Finding the entries David had made in the database, I started reading through them. There was one on the chemical composition of a fluid extruded on the leaves. I looked at the ferns again and now I could see that some of the upper leaves were glistening. The leaves David wasn’t constantly petting.

“Evan misses you; you’ve been hanging out down here an awful lot.”

“He’s too busy to come here.”

Lorne must have run the entire way to get down to the greenhouse so quickly. “David? Rinka?”

“This way!”

Evan skidded to a halt and stared at his boyfriend. “Oh, this is way worse than I thought,” he said to me. “David, what have you been doing down here?”

“Just hanging out. Listen, Evan, can you hear them singing?”

Lorne did what I had been leery of doing. He reached down and grasped David by the shoulders and hauled him up out of the planting bed. “Up we go. You’re going to see Doctor Keller now.”

“I feel fine.”

“Oh, I have no doubt that you do, my little plant lover.” He started pulling David along when the botanist dug his heels in.

I pulled out my pocket knife and used it to cut off a leaf that had drops of the liquid stuff on them. I held the end wrapped in a tissue that had been in the pocket of my BDUs. Taking Doctor Parrish’s datapad, I followed Lorne as he dragged his now loudly protesting boyfriend out of the greenhouse. The complaints got louder and more ferocious the further we got from the plants. Evan eventually picked David up and slung him over his shoulder to carry him kicking and screaming to the infirmary.

It took Keller three days to bring David down off his new addiction to the Hibolian ferns. I felt really bad for my friend as he went through withdrawal. They checked the security feeds and it looked like he had spent two straight days in the greenhouse with the ferns after he argued with Evan.

All of David’s friends took turns sitting with him, reading to him or just listening to him as he talked nonsense, still in the throes of his plant high. By the fourth day, he was exhausted and slept. On the fifth, he woke up and was completely embarrassed when he found out what had been happening in the three weeks he had lost. He kept apologizing until I snapped at him to stop. Then I felt bad so we watched the whole series of The Private Life of Plants so I could make it up to him.
