Yes, so in my last post, I showed much enthusiasm about making updates, being more regular on LJ, recording trips, yada yada yada. And why, you might well ask, have I not done so? Quite simply because, I do not yet have a laptop in my possession. Correct. I have been in the UK for over a month and have been unable to do as simple a thing as get my hands on a Macbook Pro that belongs to me. And it is getting really, really annoying.
Technically, I should be able to place an order as a student, and thus get a pretty hefty student discount, if I access the Apple online education store from a uni computer. Somehow, this is not working, not from any of the uni campuses or computer rooms. Not even while accessing uni WiFi from a personal laptop. So I tried placing the order over the phone. I don't want to go into the details, but three times now I have been given false hope before they abruptly cancelled my order. I would just go to the store and pay if the credit card I'm using was actually in my possession, but it's in India with mum and all I have is a number. Sigh. I discovered today that faculty can log into the edu website, so I'm going to ask one of the profs/technicians for help Monday. Hope it works.
While Apple's been leading me around in circles, they've also launched the new, fancy, more expensive, brilliant new Macbook Pro, which will now be what I get...what I'll have to get, not that I mind, just that it's 200 or 300 pounds more expensive. Lol. Then again if I'd bought the old one and they'd launched the new 2 days later, I'd have been so pissed. Oh well.
Other than that, things are great :) I've been here over a month, and pretty much settled down. I love my accomodation, and my friends, and my course is great too, though I'm going to have trouble unless I manage to overcome my laidback lastminuteness which then becomes 24 hours of super stress...like what I'm recovering from right now. I left a photography assignment till the last minute, and then had some technical problems with the camera and the professor very kindly granted me an extra day to finish, without cutting my marks. I was supposed to hand it in today, and missed him because I was running around trying to get prints and was unaware that the profs leave early on Fridays. So I wrote an apology letter and slipped it, along with the assignment, under his door...somehow I'm quite sure this practice is frowned upon. AND I just found out that the prints weren't essential after all. Ugh.
All in all, today's been fairly traumatising. And due to last night's hurried photoshoot, my room looks like it's been hit by a tornado. I've been uncharacteristically neat since I got here...partly because I want to be, and partly because I have neat friends who like to be able to find a place to sit when they come into my room...so the mess is actually bothering me. It is a new experience. I should probably get up and clean now.
As a parting note - food here is expensive in general, except for desserts, which are absurdly cheap. Must...not...get...fat! Hmm...I think it's time for a strawberry trifle break. Midnight snack. Oops...1 am snack, looks like. Why am I even still awake?!
