Jogging in cold and wind

I started c25k about two years ago, just after Susan was born.  For some time, it's not been a question of "can I do it."  I can do a half hour jog three times a week.  I very rarely skip a day, although I often bump around the two day break for convenience.  I have yet to injure myself.  The distance I travel, and therefore my pace, in that half ( Read more... )

You misunderstand - on the days when I jog, I also lift (relatively small) barbells in the evening. I discovered while LARPing that although jogging was increasing my endurance, my upper body strength wasn't keeping up.

Ah, indeed I did misunderstand. My first recommendation is the book "You Are Your Own Gym", which contains a wide selection of very good progressively graded exercises for building strength using only your own body weight.

If you definitely want weights, there are many companies that make adjustable dumbbells. If you are willing to deal with the hassle of putting plates on and off and the free weights, these are inexpensive enough that trying to find more plates for some other set seems hardly worthwhile: http://www.amazon.com/Lion-Roar-Fitness-Adjustable-Dumbbells/dp/B004UY5CR8/ref=sr_1_11?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1327979575&sr=1-11. If you're willing to pay a lot more, you can get things that are higher tech and possibly more convenient.

I was actually going to try craigslist, since weights are things one often acquires, fails to use, and want to get rid of....

Fair enough. You'd probably find that easy enough on craigslist. I never think to check.

Interesting. On craigslist, dumbells seem to go at $.50 to $.70 a pound.

At those prices I might as well buy the ones you linked, new.
