“What happened to us Kibum-ah?” Jinki said quietly to the boy sitting on the edge of the couch, eyes still glued to the wooden floor. Why did you push me away? He painfully thought to himself. The other boy remained silent. He hung his head so low that Jinki couldn’t even see his face. Kibum that was known to be a man with thousand words acted like he totally forgot how to talk. Jinki sighed and walked slowly to their shared bedroom.
“Go to sleep Kibum-ah. We have a busy day tomorrow. Or today, since it’s already 1, whatever. Well, good night.” It wasn’t until Kibum heard the door being closed that he immediately broke down to tears.
In front of everyone, Kim Kibum always held his ground. He smiled through everything, ignoring every pain that passes his heart. He was strong, everyone expects him to be strong. After all, he was SHINee’s Almighty Key, wasn’t he? So he smiled almost 90% of the time, but when he was alone, he let himself be vulnerable.
He laid on the couch, still crying. He kept thinking what he should’ve said to Jinki earlier. He was scared. He was scared of his real feelings towards the leader. He was scared that he’ll lose Jinki. ‘What happened to us?’ the question repeated itself on Kibum’s head until he fell asleep.
*Flashback*
“Hyuuuuuuung,” Kibum sang while running towards the other boy, hugging him from behind. “I miss you.” Jinki smiled,
“I miss you too!” They didn’t know what brought them closer like this, but it just happened. They felt comfortable around each other, it was like they have known each other forever.
Kibum was a very caring guy, he liked taking care of people, that was why people called him SHINee’s umma. Jinki was the leader, he was clumsy, but nonetheless responsible, people called him SHINee’s appa.
At first Kibum and Jinki being together was merely for fan service. To give the fans something to talk about, something to be excited about. After all, they were the Umma and Appa, and they should be together, right?
But soon, things changed, Kibum felt something different when he looked at Jinki’s smiling face. Every single touch from Jinki sent electricity throughout Kibum’s body. He was starting to fall for the leader. The feeling was overwhelming that he started to feel scared, because nothing could ever happened between them, because Jinki would just reject him if he knew about his feelings. That was why he decided to slowly push Jinki away. He ran to Jonghyun, his best friend and told him everything, even about his feelings for Jinki. The other’s reaction was obvious “Are you freaking blind? I think it’s pretty obvious that Jinki-hyung likes you too.” Jonghyun had said to him, but Kibum wasn’t convinced. He was scared, really scared.
So from that day forwards, Kibum started to ignore Jinki little by little and clung himself to Jonghyun. Little did he know that what Jonghyun said was true, Jinki did liked him. But seeing how Kibum pushed him away, Jinki just set aside his feelings and didn’t say anything. He let his heart break little by little every time he saw Kibum with Jonghyun. But he never said anything, because Kibum looked happy. He didn’t want to ruin that. And so they drifted apart, day after day.
*end of flashback*
Taemin was the first person to wake up that morning. He walked out of the room and saw Kibum sleeping on the couch. He walked closer and started to poke Kibum.
“Hyung… Kibum hyung, wake up.” It only took 2 minutes for Kibum to wake up. He sat up and rubbed his eyes. It felt heavy. I hate crying. Taemin grinned, “wake up Hyung, it’s morning.” He stood up and walked towards the kitchen.
Not long after that Minho and Jonghyun joined them in the kitchen. Kibum was back to his usual cheerful, bubbly, umma-like self, telling everyone to eat breakfast right so they would have enough energy for the day.
“Where’s Jinki hyung?” Taemin asked. Kibum stomach fluttered just by hearing his name,
“Probably still asleep. Go wake him up Kibum hyung.” Minho said, still focusing on eating his breakfast.
“Why do I have to wake up Onew?” The other three stopped eating and looked up to Kibum.
“Hyung… why are you calling Jinki hyung by his stage name?” Taemin asked innocently, “Are we doing a hidden camera or something?” Kibum answered a simple no and turned away.
Almost like a cue, Jinki came out of the bedroom, still looking very sleepy. Kibum couldn’t help but to stare at the older.
“Good morning!” Jinki grinned. Kibum’s heart started beating faster. Kibum hated him, he hated him for being so adorable, for being so cute, for making his heart beats unbelievably fast whenever he was around, and for making him fell helplessly in love with him. Oops, did he said love?
Jinki caught Kibum staring at him with a cold expression that it scared him a little. He chose to nod a little and smile sheepishly, “Key,”
Taemin almost immediately turned to Jinki,
“What? You too, hyung? What’s with the stage name? Do I have to call you Bling-bling?” Taemin turned to Jonghyun.
The older quietly nudged Taemin’s arms,
“I think there’s something wrong between them,” Jonghyun said quietly. Taemin answered a quiet no and continued eating.
Being quiet wasn’t Kibum usual self, so for the rest of breakfast time, he kept talking. He sat with Jonghyun, yes, with. It wasn’t a big deal for Jonghyun, he knew that Kibum was just being spoiled and he knew that it meant nothing. They were just best friends and nothing more Kibum had his arms around the other’s waist, facing Taemin and Minho, completely ignoring Jinki’s presence. All Jinki did was stare at Kibum, admiring how beautiful the other look and trying to figure out why the hell Kibum acted this way towards him. Without him realizing, his eyes fell on Kibum’s arms, which were wrapped tightly around Jonghyun’s waist. He couldn’t help but felt a sharp pain in his heart. He was jealous.
After breakfast they got 3 hours to relax and prepare themselves for the first schedule of the day. Taemin and Minho decided to play video games, Jinki was concentrating on his laptop and Jonghyun dragged Kibum into the bedroom.
“Seriously, Kibum. When are you going to tell Jinki hyung about your feelings?” Jonghyun asked. Kibum sat on Jinki’s bed grabbing his pillow and played with the corner of it. “It’s obvious that you love him Kibum, just confess! You’re making it harder for the two of you.” Kibum jerked up from the bed,
“Don’t you think I know that? But what happened if he rejected me? It would be awkward, and nothing will ever be the same anymore. It just won’t work.” Tears slowly leaked out of Kibum’s eyes. Jonghyun sighed and hugged his friend. Kibum hugged him back, hiding his crying face on Jonghyun’s shoulder. It was the perfect moment for Jinki to opened the door. Jinki felt something hit his chest again.
“Oh! Oops, I’m… sorry. I didn’t know you two were… um, anyway I’m sorry.” He said while looking down and quickly slammed the door close. Jonghyun swore he saw tears welling up on his leader’s eyes.
“Kibum, seriously. You have to talk to him.”
“Why?” Kibum said quietly. The other scoffed,
“Why? How about because you love him and clearly he loves you too?” Jonghyun sighed, “Let me tell you something, if he doesn’t love you, he wouldn’t stick by your side even though you pushed him away like every time. I bet you didn’t see how sad his face was this morning when you completely ignored him, right?”
“Fine. I’ll talk to him, but seriously, if anything bad happen, I’m blaming you.”
“Fine. But everything goes perfect, we have to eat my choice of food for dinner all week.” They shook hands and Kibum walked out of the room. Jonghyun laid on his bed, already making up list of foods that he wanted to eat for the next 7 days.
“Minho, where’s Jinki hyung?” Kibum asked.
“Huh, I thought you were in that awkward stage when you talk to each other using your stage names.” Minho answered sarcastically. When the other doesn’t reply, he apologized, “Sorry. He’s out in the balcony.” Kibum smiled playfully,
“Thanks.” He walked over to the TV and switched it off, earning protests from the two boys who were still playing the
video game.
“Jinki hyung…” He said as he joined the leader on the balcony. Jinki turned his head to Kibum and smiled a little.
“Hey, I’m sorry about walking in on you and Jonghyun. I didn’t mean to.” Kibum was way beyond nervous now. He kept looking down and playing with his fingers, avoiding the other’s eyes.
“It’s okay. I mean, we weren’t doing anything.” They both stood in silence, “I’m sorry hyung, for… ignoring you this morning.” Jinki smiled again, bitterly.
“It’s okay Kibum-ah,”
‘To hell with this,’ Kibum thought before he threw himself to Jinki, wrapping his arms around Jinki’s waist. Jinki froze, he didn’t know what to do, he didn’t expect Kibum to hug him, hell he didn’t expect Kibum to smile at him, let alone hug. Slowly, he hugged him back. He couldn’t help but to enjoy the warmth that the other gave. He whispered quietly,
“Why did you push me away?”
“I was afraid…” Kibum answered. His voice wasn’t any louder than Jinki’s.
“What are you possibly afraid of?” Jinki started to caressed Kibum’s hair.
“I was afraid that if you knew about my feelings, you’ll leave me.” Jinki froze. “I was afraid I’m going lose you. I was afraid of not being near you,” Kibum let go and stepped back, “J-Jinki hyung… is it okay if I l-l-love you?” Jinki felt all the pain he felt before disappear within seconds. His heart filled with joy and warmth the second he heard Kibum said love. He stepped closer and carefully pressed his lips on Kibum’s. The kiss lasted only for a minute but it was gentle and loving. Kibum couldn’t ask for anything better.
“I’ve always loved you.” Jinki smiled, “And trust me, I’m not going to leave you, ever. You’re never going to lose me.” Kibum hugged him tightly,
“Don’t ever let me go,”
“I won’t. If I wanted to let go, I would’ve given up long ago after you pushed me away.” They both chuckled quietly.
“You have to promise me that you won’t push me away again? It hurts you know.”
“Never again. I promise.” Kibum lifted his face and kissed Jinki again. Jinki’s arms were tightly wrapped around Kibum. They were lost in each other, treasuring this precious moment. It was all very romantic until Jonghyun appeared behind Kibum.
“Aw…. See what I told you Kibum?” Kibum and Jinki broke this kiss and stared at Jonghyun. He smirked and held up the peace sign, “I totally ruined the moment, didn’t I?”
“Just shoo.” Kibum was blushing and Jinki just grinned like a dork he was. Jonghyun was about to walk away when we turned back to Kibum.
“Oh I almost forgot. Okay, day 1, I want bulgoggi. Day 2… some japcae and side dishes would be nice, day 3…” Jonghyun continued naming food that he wanted to eat. Kibum rolled his eyes while Jinki suddenly joined in,
“Day 3, chicken! Chicken!” He stood silence for a second and turned his head to Kibum, “Why is Jonghyun naming food?” Kibum wanted to laugh, but instead he just patted Jinki’s back,
“I love you, dubu.” and walked back into the living room.
The future was still a mystery to Jinki and Kibum. They didn’t know whether they would be together forever, or not. But that wasn’t important. What’s important is the fact that they were there for each other and they loved each other. Kibum wasn’t scared anymore because he knew Jinki will always be there.
