I have made it to Ithaca, and I couldn't be happier. Over the last week, my parents helped me move into my new apartment, and it is absolutely perfect. It immediately felt like a home, and I just love it. It is in a really nice area, partway between the Commons (the "downtown" area, with a bunch of restaurants and funky stores and the city center and whatnot) and Collegetown, which is a couple blocks of lunch-restaurants and the edge of the university campus. It's about a 10-minute walk to my lab. A 10-minute drive to the Cornell Dairy Bar (YUM!!!). I desperately need to get used to the hills, but at least I have a few months to practice before everything ices over:)
I met with my advisor, and he is still so cool. The grad students are extremely helpful and so friendly. I haven't met any incoming grad students yet, but we have Grad School orientation Monday for everyone, and then Wednesday is the Civil Engineering Orientation. I'm in the Fluid Mechanics group (so I will eventually be a Fluid Mechanician, or some weird word!!) but I have many hours of classes and research before I am that special.
It is just a beautiful part of the country. People are friendly and helpful everywhere. The gorges are amazing, and I cannot wait to go hiking and camping among them. And all the lake adventures... and wineries... and just everything.
All of my worries are gone now that I am here, so all that is left is to make actual friends so that I have company for dinner and other excursions, and my life will be complete. Not really, but close to it.
And I have so many friends in SO many different places right now, so I have great vacation spots everywhere! It is funny how everything just totally exploded after graduation, so it will be wonderful to reunite with everyone these next few years since so much has changed in the last few weeks alone!
Alright, enough of my giddiness for one day. But hooray for Cornell, I must say. I wish I had known more about this place when I was applying for college, but I bet grad school will be even better:)
