In the name of procrastination, I bring you the gift of music.
39 Songs Rinny Loves, Volume 1 1. Where Did You Go, Ashley Parker Angel
I'm a sucker for strong piano. Despite the singer's really awful name, this one is good.
2. Shades of Gray, Waking Ashland
More piano. Plus, I like the singers voice and it has a nice melody.
Are you listening to my words?
And I saw your smile pass me by,
And landed far from me.
And what does that mean?
3. Can't Stop, Mozella
Pretty little love song. It's simple and sweet. You speak to my soul like you've known it before.
4. At The Other End of the Leash, The Paperchase
This song is wildly disturbing, but it moves me.
Like a pretty girl in a wheelchair
That still claims she fell down the stairs
But if he touches you again
With those grubby little hands
I’ll have to break them
5. 18th Floor Balcony/Hidden Track (It's Just Me), Blue October
I love Blue October. The lead singer has a very unique voice and raw lyrics that make me sit up and listen. The first song is a quiet, pretty love song and it makes me happy. And the other, it's just the lead singer and a piano...and it speaks to the place I am in my life right now. It's sad and hopeful all at once.
I'm gonna feel a peace in me,
I'm gonna feel at home.
I'm gonna make this cloud above me disappear, be gone.
I wanna feel a punch inside, my heart beat on the floor.
I don't wanna hurt no more.
6. Mad World, Gary Jules
So I heard this first on a commercial for a video game and I immediately stopped what I was doing to listen. It's just one of those songs. I'm working on a Firefly Vid to it, but... no where near done yet.
I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
that the dreams in which I'm dying
are the best I've ever had.
7. Hide and Seek, Imogen Heap
Completely unique vocals without accompanyment of any kind (that I can tell).
Oily marks appear on walls
where pleasure moments hung before
the takeover, the sweeping insensitity of this still life
8. Kidding Ourselves, Stabilo
I wish I had more Stablio songs, because I love their style. Very similar to Blue October. My favorite of theirs is Flawed Design, but alas, I no longer have this one. However, this song is just as good.
So tonight let's be as bold as we want to
and drink, drink till we fall down the steps
Remember how that made us laugh
Remember how all that we did was laugh
and cry
9. Casimir Pulaski Day, Sufjan Stevens
It's just sad and beautiful. It's a deeply personal song for the singer, and it shows.
On the floor at the great divide
With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied
I am crying in the bathroom
10. Pretty Girl (The Way), Sugarcult
This song sounds like so many others. But I just love the lyrics.
She's beautiful as usual
with bruises on her ego
11. She's My Ride Home, Blue October
This is one of my favorite songs simply because he says "Honey." I don't know why that tickles me so, but it does.
I'll be reaching for the stars with you, oh honey
who cares if no one else believes
so I set fire to everyone around
12. Not Like The Other Girls, The Rasmus
I refer you to my current header. For me, this is the River song of all songs out there.
She's fading away, away from this world
drifting like a feather
she's not like the other girls
she lives in the clouds and talks to the birds
hopeless little one
she's not like the other girls I know
13. Cute Without the E, Taking Back Sunday
I like this song simply because it's complicated.
Hoping for the best just hoping nothing happens
A thousand clever lines unread on clever napkins
I will never ask if you don't ever tell me
I know you well enough to know you never loved me
14. I Hear the Bells, Mike Doughty
One of the few songs that just makes me happy to hear.
I'm seeking girls
In sales and marketing
Let's go make out
Up in the balcony
Your business dress
So businesslike and I'm
Tossing the blouse
Over a chairback
15. The Freshman (acoustic), The Verve Pipe
This song came out when I was a Freshman in high school, and I've never been able to let it go.
For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and
We'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen
16. The Crane Wife Part 1 and 2, the Decemberists
I don't know anyone who's heard this and not loved it. It's long, and pretty and emotional and just... guh.
My crane wife arrived at my door in the moonlight
All star bright and tongue-tied I took her in
We were married and bells rang sweet for our wedding
And our bedding was ready when we fell in
39 Songs Rinny Loves, Volume 2 1. First Breath After Coma, Explosions in the Sky
This is sans-lyrics, and I love Explosions in the Sky. I've got six or so of their songs in my writing playlist, they help me focus.
2. Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades, Brand New
I used this song as a basis for one of my Danny/Rebecca LJ banners based on
Deliberate Lies. I love it for them.
He is the lamb, she is the slaughter.
She's moving way too fast and all he wanted was to hold her.
Nothing that he tells her is really having an effect.
He whispers that he loves her,
but she's probably only looking for se-
3. Existentialism on Prom Night, Straylight Run
My favorite song by this group.
Sing me something soft,
Sad and delicate,
Or loud and out of key,
Sing me anything.
4. You Don't Know Me, Jann Arden
This is a remake but one of my favorites. Her voice is unique and the song is *sigh*.
Oh I am just a friend
that's all I've ever been
because you don't know me
5. Time After Time, Erin Bode
A zillion people have remade this song, but this is my favorite version. It's got a hint of jazz to it. I have no idea who it is she's singing with.
6. I Will Follow You Into The Dark, Death Cab for Cutie
I love these guys. They have a sincerity about them. This song is kind of morbidly romantic.
Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
7. Congratulations, Blue October, feat. Imogen Heap
A song about lost love. It just makes me ache...there's something so sincere about Justin's voice.
I came to see the light in my best friend
You seemed as happy as you'd ever been
My chance of being open was broken
And now you're Mrs. him.
8. Surrounded, Chantal Kreviazuk
This is one of those songs that you listen to while you're driving and just belt out.
It's all around me, it's all around me
I'm surrounded
You know it's all around me, it's all around me
You surround me like a circle
9. Brighter Than Sunshine, Aqualung
Another simple, happy, loving song.
What a feeling in my soul
love burns brighter than sunshine
10. Brothers On A Hotel Bed, Death Cab For Cutie
The title sounds bad...but really, it's not like that.
But even at our swiftest speed we couldn't break from the concrete
In the city where we still reside.
And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn for the sea like navy men
Cause now we say goodnight from our own separate sides
Like brothers on a hotel bed
11. Magic, Ben Folds Five
This was another of those songs that when I first heard it, I froze and could do nothing but listen. It's sad and beautiful. The bass is just mesmerizing.
you're the magic that holds the sky up from the ground
you're the breath that blows these cool winds 'round
trading places with an angel now
12. Kiss the Rain, Billie Myers
It's just cute and romantic. It reminds me of high school.
Hello...
Do you miss me
I hear you say you do
But not the way I'm missing you
13. Say Goodbye, Eva Cassidy
So I call you up just to tell you why
Why I left you and say goodbye
Ooh must be the mood I'm in
I'm thinking of you again
I call you up just to tell you why
Why I left you and say goodbye
14. Have a Little Faith in Me, John Hiatt
There's an honesty to this song. It makes me happy.
And when your backs against the wall
Just turn around and you will see
I will catch, I will catch your fall baby
Just have a little faith in me
15. Sometimes Wanna Die, Joydrop
It's really not as morbid as it sounds. I like this one more because it's catchy than for any other reason.
And everywhere I go
And everyone I see
Somehow
Almost sets me free
And the space where we meet
Is different from the rest
And I just can't seem to forget that.
16. Farther Down, Joydrop
17. Drive, Melissa Ferrick
It's rather NC-17. Which is why I like it.
Your mouth waters
stretched out on my bed
your fingers are trembling
and your heart is heavy and red
and your head is bent back
and your back is arched
and my hand is under there
holding you up
18. There Ain't No Sunshine, Ottis Redding
Okay, so who doesn't LOVE this song?
19. Rest in Pieces, Saliva
It's just good and I am so tired of writing down the reasons I like these songs. If you've read down this far, I am in awe and amazed.
Look at me, my depth perception must be off again
Cause this hurts deeper than I thought it did
It has not healed with time
It just shot down my spine
20. Time and Time Again, Stretch Princess
This song is new to me...but I love it dearly.
oh to love you to love you not
it makes no difference it's all that i've got
and there's no reason for you to watch while i wait for you to be perfect
perfectly late
21. Your Own Disaster, Taking Back Sunday
This one oddly reminds me of Jayne/Kaylee. That sad melencholy of unrequited love.
And I dare you to forget
the marks you left
across my neck
from those nights when we were both
found at our best
22. If I Didn't Have You, Amanda Marshall
I don't know why anymore. I just do. Leave me alone.
I'd give up my sight just to see you
I'd beg, I would borrow and steal
I'd cut off my hands just to touch you
And tear out my heart so you'd know how I feel
23. Boston, Augustana
I heard these guys live with Snow Patrol this past fall before I ever got this song. They were excellent and this song just caught me.
She said I think I'll go to Boston.
I think I'll start a new life.
I think I'll start it over, where no one knows my name.
I'll get out of California, I'm tired of the weather,
I think I'll get a lover and fly 'em out to Spain.
Deep breath, dear god that took forever. Which is excellent, for I have successfully procrastinated. Enjoy.
