Day 19
First day at whistler.
Hired or ski gear. Here is my first hint: when you walk, go heel toe.
Second hint: leave the buckles undone when walking as it's easier on your shins and calves.
Third hint: take the bus from blackcomb base to whistler. DO NOT walk.
So it was cold. There was snow everywhere. Snow everywhere is distracting.
Nikki gave me my Christmas present which was a day long ski lesson. Our ski instructor was a cute little Spanish lady with an accent.
Learning the basics seemed easy enough but when we started going down learner slopes and I still couldn't turn or stop properly was when I threw my first tantrum.
I am a bit of a wuss and didn't want to go fast until I was sure I wasn't going to run anyone over. It was about this time that the cute ski intructor turned into a harpie and could be heard screeching my name.
"Karrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiina! Hurry up we are waiting for you!!!"
Or the even higher pitched:
"karrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiina! What is wrong with you??!"
This was the turning point for my first tantrum. What's wrong with me? I've never seen snow before. It's my first time skiing! My calves hurt and my shins hurt and if I lean forward any more I'm gonna fall on my face. And did I mention that it's my first time skiing??
So she tells me to follow her and do what she does. So I do. And it's too fast and I can't control my skiis since I still haven't got the whole steering thing down pat, I near miss another skier and I have a massive stack and one of my skiis comes off.
All this time the harpie is shrieking at me not to use my poles. Like I had any control over any part of my body at that stage.
The next two goes I pretty much sulked like a 3 year old and tried to figure things out on my own without doing any edge stuff or lifting any legs off the ground.
Then it clicked. My body started functioning properley and I could steer and stop when I actually wanted to.
There are no words to describe how it feels to finally 'get' something and to feel icy wind on your face and to look around and see the most amazing scenery you have ever seen. Definitley a moment I will remember.
Murphys law was in action too. Because after that moment, our lesson ended and they laid we could only go up the carpet one more time.
I cannot wait until tomorrow!!!
The last thing I want to tell you is that after skiiing, a popular thing to do is strip off into your togs and sit in the outdoor hot spa. They call it a hot tub or jacuzzi here. It's horribly cold walking (running) to the spa but it's awesome sitting in there!
So we are heading off to find some dinner and stuff.
Hope you're having as much fun as me!!!
