Character Information
Name: Riley Anne McGranahan
LJ Username:
rileymcgranahanHouse: Slytherin
Year: (1st - 7th) 7th
Age: 17
Birthdate: April 1, 1988
Zodiac Sign / Description: Aries
A Slytherin Aries is a bundle of contradictions. In some ways, they have the potential to be the strongest of their House - the intensity, drive, and brilliant visionary dreams of the Aries combined with the innate leadership skills, the charisma, and the profound sense of self (including the eccentric lack of interest in conforming to what other people think) is stuff of which great magical legends are made. However, a Slytherin Aries has much to learn about politics, knowing who is an appropriate object of trust and who is not trustworthy, knowing when to keep one's mouth shut, and knowing when to avoid acting on impulse in order to use a situation to its best advantage. Although they hate to admit it, these Slytherins are easily manipulated by more cynical, shrewd peers in the Serpent's Den. If they can learn to manage their blind spots, they will go far. Slytherin Aries types can be quite cruel, especially if they have enough physical prowess to bully smaller students; those that are not cruel can still be thoughtless and brutally tactless without actually meaning to cause damage.

Personal History: The only child of purebloods Gerald and Corinne McGranahan, Riley grew up rather spoiled. She had the best of everything. Her mother more or less let Riley do whatever she wanted because she wanted her daughter to truly live her life before she was forced to marry and have children. Riley was always closer to her mother than her father because her mother was so open and caring and her father was so strict.
Corinne had one brother; Ed Pascal, her twin. Even though they had completely different beliefs and didn't agree with each other's choices in life, they remained incredibly close. She and Riley would frequently visit the Pascals and, while her mother talked with her brother, Riley would play with Sam. When they were children, Sam was very much the outgoing older sibling, dragging Riley off on wild adventures and protecting her from things if need be. Riley was the quiet shy little thing that would cling to the legs of the adults and was terrified to break rules.
All through their childhood, Riley and Sam were thick as thieves, spending all the time they could together. Of course they'd fight occasionally, like when Sam would take advantage of Riley's ignorance of muggle things and tell her wild stories about what they really do. Or Riley, in her first sign of magic, accidentally turned Riley's hair ribbons into snakes. Or when Sam, jealous of how much time Ed spent with Riley, left her cousin in the attic and, unknowingly, started Riley's intense fear of the dark.
As for Ed and Cass, Riley really connected with Ed more. Mainly because she had a mother, but her father was always busy and distant. She tended to cling to Ed like nobody's business, and still does even to this day. But right now we're getting ahead of ourselves. Riley's early childhood was a very happy one.
Sadly, her mother was murdered when she was 10.
Ever since the death of his wife, Riley’s father has kept his daughter at a distance. It wasn’t that he didn’t love her. Oh no. He was scared of getting attached and then losing her as well. Riley didn’t see it that way. She felt like he abandoned her. That he didn’t love her because she wasn’t worthy of love. Hence she became terrified of commitment and was determined to never fall in love.
She still, however, spent much of her time with the Pascals.
Personality: Riley isn’t exactly what one would call stable. She distrusts almost everyone she meets on principle. She was raised to believe that no one was worthy of her, especially not Muggles or Mudbloods, although she won’t always let that show. She’s not the type to hold a poll, figuring out if you’re pure before she talks to you. If you are worthy of respect she will respect you, and sod on the damned pureblood principle. She thinks it’s silly that people would deny themselves a friend over differences. And is also, therefore, easily angered when people push her away simply for being a Slytherin. She's of the mindset that, if she's willing to give you a chance, she's not quite the stereotype.
She has a tendency to lose all self-control about the same time she loses her temper, and this has resulted in her doing a lot of rather stupid things. Like fight people who are bigger than her. She’s been in the hospital wing more times than she can remember.
On top of all these flaws, her major one is her fear of commitment. Her mother died and her father’s heart broke to the point he couldn’t love anymore, not even her, so he more or less abandoned her. Ever since, she’s been absolutely terrified that the same thing will happen to her and she’ll get hurt. Therefore she pushes everyone away and refuses to get close to a soul. She’s had a large amount of flings, but never anything important.
However, each of these strengths are also her weakness. She keeps people away so she doesn’t get hurt, but she’s also never truly happy. She’s very blunt, and almost always tells people the truth about themselves, but in general people don’t like the truth. They’d much rather have everything sugar coated for them. Her biggest weakness, again, is her fear of commitment. This fear causes her to push the guys that would be good for her away, and she’s missing out on a lot of the good things in life, such as love.
Though to most people she remains cold and distant, there are three people who can break through Riley's shell and make her speak her mind, showing a completely different side of her: Samantha Pascal, James Aldo and Darin DeLouise. The latter of the three is really only because he absolutely infuriates her to the point that she simply cannot keep her mouth shut. The other two, however, have her complete trust and respect and she would give her life for either. Sam is her cousin, yes, but more like a sister. She would have no qualms about sharing anything with her. Well, anything she can without getting murdered for saying it.
James, on the other hand, is the person who takes her shell, breaks it and makes her go along with some ridiculous stunt he has planned. Or instead, they sit and snark sexual innuendo at each other just for kicks. They do fight often enough since they're both bull headed, but Riley trusts him just as much as Sam and absolutely adores that she can unwind and be herself with him instead of that standoffish pureblood that she's supposed to be.
She loves kids and, although she doesn't want to get married, wants to have a large amount of them. Though, even if she doesn't get married, she knows she can spoil Sam's kids. It will work out for her. At any rate, though she can't necessarily trust children the way she does Sam and James, she does know that they're more accepting than her peers are. She'd give no second thoughts to going outside and playing with a first year or just sitting and listening to their stories or anything like that.
Overall, Riley's just a girl who does everything she can to please everyone around her and survive being an atypical Slytherin in a very typical Slytherin world.
Physical Description: Riley, as is typical of the Irish, has naturally red hair. It's thick and curly, coming to about shoulder length. She has light green eyes that is really the only feature about her face that she can stand. She's about 4’10” in height, and does NOT appreciate being called a leprechaun James! She’s rather fair skinned, because she physically can not tan; she burns instead. Build wise, she's got an hourglass figure but is just generally tiny.
She's very nervous in persona and tends to show it in her mannerisms. She plays with her hair a lot, is constantly chewing on something and drums her fingernails on desktops (much to the chagrin of her classmates). She is more than likely seen attached to a book of some sort or the Prophet, whether she be reading it as she walks through the halls or sitting in an alcove or a couch in the common room. She wears her school uniform just as it should be. She, admittedly, is not very creative. When out of uniform, however, she tends to have a very classical style; black, tasteful outfits, high heeled shoes, very conservative.
Preferred Body Model: Ella Scott Lynch
Hobbies and talents:
1) Music in general. She's played the piano since she was young and, though she may not be the best, she loves to sing.
2) Reading. She reads absolutely anything she can get her hands on, and is constantly seen with a book in her hand.
Weaknesses:
1.) TERRIFIED of the dark. Ever since that time when they were little and Sam left Riley locked in the attic by herself, she's literally unable to function in the dark. As in, she goes into hysterics and can barely move.
2.) Paranoia. Riley, quite frankly, believes that everyone is out to get her. On top of this, she always fears the worst outcome for everything. Hence why she is so RIDICULOUSLY overprotective of Sam. She believes her cousin is too naive and is going to get herself terribly hurt someday.
3.) Overly sensitive. She tends to take any insult to heart, even if she knows it wasn't necessarily directed toward her. For example, if you were to offhandedly say most Slytherins are evil? She would more than likely jump down your throat and get very upset. It wouldn't matter that you were excluding her.
4) Distant. It takes a lot to gain Riley's trust and friendship, and once you lose it, it's gone forever with few exceptions. Because of this, she tends to distance herself from most people, and even fewer people know anything about the real her.

What would your character smell if they sniffed Amortentia (the love potion)? Honestly, this is really hard for me to answer as I'm fairly sure Riley has no hormones. But for the sake of actually answering the question, I'm going with wool for certain, as Riley adores sheep, a home cooked meal, and the smell of an old book.
Do you think your character is capable of successfully employing a Cruiciatus Curse? Why or why not? No, no, and...let me think, NO. Riley simply doesn't hate anyone enough to hurt them that much. Not even Darin.
Describe how your character would react, in the form of a sample RP, if faced with a Dementor. Mary, mother of God. Her jaw dropped and she gaped, in total shock. This couldn't be happening. Horrible memories started showing themselves in the back of her head. She started feeling immense despair and hopelessness as she stood there watching it's every move with wide eyes.
No. She couldn't give in to it. She was a McGranahan after all.
What was that spell again? Ah, shit. Sam had helped her study about it. Then again, she wasn't really paying attention to what she was saying and spent most of her time wondering when it would be time for dinner. Wait! She knew there were happy thoughts involved. Happy thoughts and they'll lift you into the air. No...that was Peter Pan. BUGGER, she was so screwed.
Riley would have screamed if she could have as the dementor came toward her. She backed up quickly. If she didn't remember that damned spell soon, she could die! Granted she'd already convinced herself that she was going to die young. She'd pissed far too many people off.
In the short time she had as the dementor drew closer, Riley was reliving the worst moments of her life. The day her mum died, the day she was stuck in that attic for hours with that boggart. If it hadn't been for Uncle Ed realizing she was missing she might have been there even longer. And for some reason, that thought triggered something in her head and she remembered the spell. She focused on her happiest memory, a memory of her and her mother together, raised her wand and shouted 'Expecto Patronum'. A silver ram appeared at the end of her wand and chased the dementor down.
Alignment: OH GEES. It depends on whether you mean how she acts or how she feels. Outwardly she's pro Voldemort, even though you can't tell. She only does it because it's what she thinks will make her father proud. Inwardly, she's very much anti Voldemort but keeps it to herself as she lives with a lot of future Death Eaters. Once she's out of school, she will more than likely become a blood traitor.
Requests: Um...if Riley's asked, she will more than likely join VA. Maybe prefect if that's OK with everyone else. Other than that, not really.
