We had just gotten back from visiting her parents for Thanksgiving, I love her more than anything in the world. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her. I love spending time together as a family, especially playing the board game Pictionary as a family. Granted my team always loses and nobody wants to pick me, but I was never really good at drawing. In fact, the last time we played I tried to draw a whale, and everyone kept guessing a variation of the word, “fish.” Talk about embarrassing.
As soon as we got back to the base we went straight into a briefing about a nest that needed to be wiped out and the eggs taken back to The Iniative for testing. Eggs? Seriously, I thought the Initiative was done with their testing and making bigger demons. Didn’t they screw up enough with Adam? Well, obviously not, because here we are. I flip through the folder that’s on the table and then look up to catch part of the slideshow. Looking at the pictures makes me want to vomit, the devastation and murder that these animals have created is so graphic, there are body parts and blood everywhere. You couldn’t even tell that some of these victims were human.
Even through all of this I couldn’t keep my eyes off of Sam, always stealing a glance when the slide was changing, a quick reassuring smile. I was in love with her, and she was in love with me; it was a match that was made...in a "higher place." Neither of us believed in God, but we did believe that there was somewhere better than this God forsaken Earth. There had to be, or else we had nothing to look forward to. With all the bad that both of us have witnessed, it was no surprise that we came to the conclusion that there couldn't be a "supreme being" who let all this evil happen and did nothing to stop it. However, we did both believe in a better place once you died, where that was, neither of us knew, but it was the hope that kept us fighting.
After the briefing we were dismissed, I opened the door and followed Sam out of the briefing room.
"How about some shut-eye before the big mission?" Sam said with a wink, playfully hitting me. I knew that meant that neither of us would be getting any sleep. Since we were at her parents house, it made the love-making well pretty damn hard and after the 3rd night we just decided to wait until we got back home.
“Not right now honey, I’m going to run over the mission specs and make sure that everything is set up for tonight.” I say as I pull her into a spot where we have 15 seconds before the camera’s sweep again. I lean down and kiss her softly. “I love you honey, I’ve got to make sure that everything is ready to go, double check everything so afterwards we can go home and then you know get some shut-eye.” I tease, my head resting against hers.
“Come on baby, you can’t say no to me. I’m ready to go right now. I can’t help it.” Sam says as her hands start to move over my chest and she stands on her tippy-toes to kiss me again.
I completely melt into her kiss, “Ok, you’re right. I’m sure everything will be fine. Let me sign out and I’ll meet you back at the house?” I say as I kiss her one more time and then walk down the hall.
Back at the house she was waiting, already ready to go. I couldn’t help myself, she was so beautiful that we must have been making love for an hour before we both finally had mind blowing orgasms and then collapsed on the bed.
I heard the S.O.S distress call over my radio. I instantly jumped out of bed and grabbed my radio. “Bravo Team this is Alpha Leader, come in?!” I shouted into the radio and got nothing but static back. I quickly dressed and grabbed my keys and ran to the hummer, calling back-up as I turned the GPS tracker in Sam’s vest on and followed the blinking light to her location. I met up with Graham and a few of the other guys who were already there.
“Why didn’t you call me?!” I shouted as I slipped my vest on and then put all my guns and tasers into place.
“Sir, we did, your pager must have died or something.” Graham replies.
I look at my pager, it’s on but on silent. Sam always did that when I was sleeping so it wouldn’t wake me up, but she’d wake me up if hers went off. “Damn it” I cursed as I grabbed my M-16 from the back of the hummer and checked the clip.
“Come on’ let’s go!” I shouted as I put the commlincc into my ear and then took off running towards Sam’s location. We finally came across a clearing in the woods and there was a little house that seemed out of place.
Graham grabbed my flak jacket and I turned around to face him. “Get a grip on yourself Finn, she’s fine. Let’s just do this and get her home.” I shrugged him off and pulled my gun up at the ready. I used hand-signals to tell the rest of the team to split into teams of two and cover the house and for Graham to go in through the back. Sure Graham is normally my wing-man, but he’s not thinking straight. That’s my wife in there. I’m going to shoot first and ask questions later.
"Sam!" I shout as he kick the door open, my gun trained as I scan the room for hostiles, the room’s empty. I hear Graham cursing as he’s not even at the backdoor yet, I turn my commlinc off and then open the door to another room as I walk in and see the red liquid everywhere. It was blood, the entire room was covered in it. Pink mist everywhere. I looked around the room and had to fight the urge to throw up, mixed with blood was pieces of meat and what looked liked human intestines scattered around. “SAMMY! Where are you?!” I shouted as I left the room and opened another door.
That’s when I saw her, lying there, the blood was already starting to pool around her, I ran to her side and slid across the floor on my knee’s until I was at her side. “God, Sammy, I’m here.” I say as I cradle her in my lap.
“Ri-R-”She sputtered, coughing up blood as she tried to speak.
“Sam, Sammy honey, don’t talk. Everything’s going to be ok, we’ll get you to the hospital and everything will be fine. Baby, just don’t leave me!” I say tears already welling up in my eyes falling freely down my face. I turned my commlinc back on and ordered a medic ASAP. I looked down at Sam, it was hard for me to look at her, I knew she was slipping. “Damn it Samantha! Don’t go…fight it…please…for us baby. For us! I love you, please!” I shout as her chest stops moving.
I watched her take her last breathe, “Samantha, I’m so sor-”I start to say but feel my shoulder yanked back by some unseen force. I’m thrown against the wall, practically tossed like a rag doll as I slide down the wall and try to gain my footing as I sway from side to side. I see the hostile in the room, it looks like an overgrown wolf, but it’s standing on two legs.
A werewolf? Is it Oz?
I grabbed my Sig Sauer from my shoulder holster and fired off the entire clip as the beast took a few steps back but then charged at me. I was defenseless, there was nothing I could do to stop this from happening. I braced for the impact and tried to throw some punches, but everything soon went black, I was coughing and my mouth had a distinct coppery taste and I knew I was coughing on my own blood.
