I still of have a heck of a lot more to read, but here (in no particular order) are the stories that have caught my eye so far.
1)
The Evidence of Things Not Seen (The Substance of Things Hoped For Remix), a remix of
Before I Wake by Esinde Nayrall: (Harry Potter) For an atheist, I have a strange affection for stories about people and their relationships with religion. This is a lovely, lovely story about Lily, her faith, and baptising Harry during the war.
2)
Insomnia (The Games We Play Remix), remix of
Charade by Arislan: (Death Note) I admit it! I admit it! I have a not-so-secret thing for L/Light where sex is an extension of their Battle of Wits. This is one of my favourite characterizations of L ever (not that I have much experience with the fandom, but still!)
3)
Redefinition (the Elvis remix), remix of
Definition by claire o: (Harry Potter) I don't read much Harry/Draco these days, but this was so cool. It's the kind of twisty, tight, super slick writing that always appeals to me so much. And I think it is a killer look at Harry and Draco even if you don't buy into Harry/Draco.
"There's more, too. Wouldn't it be something, just for once, to be the one with Potter when he does it again - gets it so blindingly right?
He's tried it before. It starts, again, with an offered hand. And this time, Harry takes it."
4)
Grace (The Coup de Main Remix), remix of
Grace by cloudnine: (Harry Potter) One of my favourite things about Remix is that it doesn't feature the usual, exhaustive lists of warnings, pairings, and summaries that come with most fic, so I end up reading things like this, which I probably wouldn't have under any other circumstances. It's awesome. It's scary. It's a look, through Ron's eyes, at a Harry who takes fighting Voldemort a little (okay, a lot) too far. It's brilliant.
5)
Metonymy (The Ragin' Meijin Remix), remix of
Metaphor by Marks: (Hikaru no Go) Oh, Touya. Touya is really awesome in this story. I mean, all the characters ring true, but I especially love Touya. And it is funny! And sweet! And the ending is the best thing ever. The summary really says it all: Four Meijin matches Touya Akira didn't win, and one that is still up for debate.
6)
Sort of Fading Now (The Reverberation Remix), remix of
Sort of Fading Now by Zulu: (Firefly) A look at Zoe after Serenity the movie. It hurts like anything, but it's got the same sort of hopeful lift at the end that the movie does. Has an incredibly touching, vulnerable opening, spot on voice, and deft characterization of the whole cast in a very short space of time. What isn't to love?
7)
Black Widow (The Blaise's Mum Has Got It Going On Tango), remix of
Blaise's Fathers by Redcandle17: (Harry Potter) So, it's a story about Blaise Zabini's mum. No, wait, wait! Stay with me! It's a really, really good story about Blaise Zabini's mum. It's well written and extremely clever. I like how much the author leaves to the readers to interpret/imagine for themselves, and the dialogue is beyond awesome. Simple and yet it all means more than it seems to.
And now you'll have to excuse me because I really do have an essay to write.
