I think it would totally depend on how many items you have in your game that you feel are irreplaceable. Whether due to age, or the fact that the creator's disappeared off the face of the earth, etc. For instance, I gather that ClubCrimsyn isn't directly hosting any of their Sims 2 content anymore. They're popular enough to where you should be able to get it from someone else, but if it was something less popular, that could be tough.

I debated that, ages ago, when I finally sat down and started organizing my whole downloads folder. Considering I even had stuff that I had downloaded from the Exchange that was later packed in the Holiday stuff pack, I realized some of the things I have in my Downloads folder just can't be downloaded anymore. So, it was worth it to me to sort through everything, instead of starting over from scratch.

You could always make a back-up of what you have now, start over in your game, and see if there's anything you end up missing from your old horde and then hunt down individual bits and pieces. If you don't end up missing anything, then you could delete the backup.

And, if you decide to keep some things, you'll have to recategorize them where necessary. So it'd be up to you if it was worth that amount of work.
