There are some things that leave me scratching my head wondering what exactly is going on in the world today. George has recently said that he would support an amendment to the constitution banning same sex marriages. Regardless of what side of the fence you sit on this is a very bad Idea. The Constitution of the United States is our blueprint for government. It sets up the three different branches, Executive (Presidency), Legislative and Judiciary. These three branches are meant to not hold the ultimate power of government and provide checks and balances over the others so to not give too much power to one branch.
The Amendments provide clarifications. There are certain inalienable rights to being a person. The Amendment I find to be of most importance in the whole gay marriage issue would be the Ninth amendment. It states : "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." Meaning anything spelled out in the constitution shall not be meant to deny other rights of being a person. Being an american citizen I have the right to feel and act as I wish. As long as my actions do not deny or hinder the freedom of others. If I profess love for another person, the ultimate expression of that love would be marriage. Well, at least a marriage proposal in the hope that the love would be expressed back. The other person is still free to their own feelings.
An amendment to the constitution to ban marriage gay or otherwise would be an amendment to curtail the inherant freedoms of being a living thinking person. Something that is completely opposite of the Constitution. Which ever side of the fence you stand on you should be scared to death of the government curtailing your right to Life Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I suggest that you notify your congresscritter that this whole idea is just plain wrong.
