Chapter 13 - In which Nino does lose out to the umbrella and realizes he a great big idiot

*
Nino alternated between staring at the phone on the table and the umbrella next to it. It had one whole day since Nino had walked in on, well, in on…hell, he didn’t even know, but it was wrong.

And he hated that Ohno hadn’t called. Why hadn’t Ohno called?

Nino sighed, rubbing his face.

What did he really see? Jun. Shirtless. Ohno. Shirtless. And asleep. Shirtless Jun pawing shirtless Ohno, who was asleep. Nino felt anger flare red hot. How dare Jun, how dare he? Seriously, Jun should know better than to steal someone else’s boyfriend.

But…

Nino’s anger deflated as quickly as it had come. But Ohno… had been asleep. He wasn’t kicking or screaming bloody murder, no, he was actually asleep. On Jun.

Nino didn’t think he’d ever felt as defeated as he did then. Didn’t he mean anything to Ohno? He had thought… he’d been introduced to Ohno’s friends, he thought he had actually meant something, that he was important. How could he have been so stupid?

“This sucks,” he glared at the umbrella. “I thought I told you to shut up a long time ago.”

He didn’t know what to do. How do you know when a relationship is over?

He shook his head and took a deep breath. He looked at the umbrella. “It can’t get worse than this.”

*
The insistent knocking on his door hadn’t stopped for 30 minutes straight. Nino had no intention of opening, but the knocking just wouldn’t stop. Perhaps it was Ohno.

Nino kicked himself when his stomach fluttered at the thought. But no, he wouldn’t open. If it was Ohno and he wanted to say something, Nino would make him work for it.

*
The next day, Nino kept glancing at the phone every few seconds. He’d called in sick for work, just so he could stare at the phone, because, what if Ohno called?

Nino was worried. And pissed off. And hurt.

Aiba had called thrice, but Nino had rejected the calls.

Why didn’t Ohno call?

*
“Why,” Nishikido asked, scrunching up his nose, “did you bring that?”

Nino ignored him, but tightened his grip on the umbrella.

“I hope you don’t plan on skewer me with it, or I’ll have to sue you.”

“You’d lose that,” Nino said, “because you’re not as handsome as I am.”

Nino turned completely to look at Ryo. “But you know, there is someone who’s more handsome than me, and do you want to know who that is? Yes? Matsumoto Jun. Matsumoto fucking Jun is prettier than what should be allowed and I hate that.”

Ryo looked positively baffled. “What?”

But Nino didn’t hear him, and he didn’t hear the door to the store open, either. “Honestly, what the hell does he have that I don’t? Looks? Charm? Money?”

“Trust?” A voice suggested from behind him, and Nino’s anger flared again.

“You,” he said and turned, coming face to face with Matsumoto Jun himself. And the man didn’t look amused, not even one bit.

“Yes, me,” Jun said icily and stepped up to Nino, looking down at him and then slapping him, hard.

“What the hell?! You’re the one being all over my boyfriend! I should hit you!” Nino hissed, one hand covering his stinging cheek and bruised ego, the other one holding tightly on to the umbrella.

Jun just looked at him so coldly that Nino actually felt a shiver run down his spine.

“I should beat you up,” Jun growled, “and make your intestines the only thing you’d see for the next three years. I can’t believe you.”

“I can’t believe you,” Nino snapped. “You knew that I was with him, but you just couldn’t handle that! You had to go ruin it all! Being shirtless and-”

“I didn’t ruin anything!” Jun raised his voice, “You did that all by yourself!”

“But you were the one there, being all over him-”

“He was SICK!” Jun yelled and silence descended.

Nino looked positively floored. He croaked, “What?”

“Yes, what,” Jun said frostily. “He was sick and he threw up… on my shirt and his own. That’s why I was shirtless.”

Something heavy dropped to the bottom of Nino’s stomach, and he felt as if the room might start spinning.

“I finally got him to sleep,” Jun carried on, “and then you showed up.”

“But, you didn’t say anything,” Nino said, weakly, everything inside him once again going, idiot, idiot, idiot, but this time for an entirely different reason.

“I didn’t want to wake him,” Jun said flatly.

“But-” Nino protested, but he knew he was beaten.

“The difference between you and me,” Jun said, bitterly, “is that I trust him and want his happiness more than my own.”

*
Nino ran all he could, his lungs burning, his throat dry. And when he stopped outside the gallery, he looked at the umbrella clutched in his hands.

“I know, it did get worse.”
