When Nino is 16 years old, he’s going to fall in love. He’s going to fall so hard he’s going to hate it for a long while after that. Then he’ll switch to denial, and he will spend the better part of a year being in complete and utter denial, because honestly, who in their right mind falls in love when they’re barely 17? Noone, that’s what Nino will say.
At some point, he’ll come to his senses and accept it, being utterly convinced that nothing will ever happen. So for a while, he’ll settle for what he has and what he can get that is freely given.
Three years into Arashi, he’ll start a project he’s going to enjoy so much he hopes it’ll never end. It’s not so much a project as it is pleasure, fun and laughs, and it’ll allow him to get closer than he would have been allowed otherwise, and he’ll milk it for all it’s worth.
At some points, he’ll experience jealousy, hot and flaring, and he’ll hate what he’s been turned into - some kind of lovesick fool, and he’ll hate that it’s all he seems able to write and sing about. At the same time, he’ll recognize that those emotions make him write lyrics, sing songs that are heartfelt, because he feels them as much as he means them.
But singing won’t make heartache go away, and Nino will more than once and twice and thrice feel the keen effects of being so much in a one-sided love, will feel the sharp ache and the fact that it settles into a dull, throbbing reminder every time he looks.
He won’t do much to confess, because over the years, he’ll develop the I-can-handle-it-syndrome, and no matter how often the rest of Arashi will tell him, he won’t do anything about it. He’s going to get teased but he can handle it, because that’ll be easier to handle than handling a love gone wrong.
Because Arashi is going to become so important to him that he won’t be able to see or imagine his life would have turned out like if it hadn’t been for Arashi.
But instead of confessing, he’ll turn to fanservice, because the fans are going to love it. He’s going to enjoy it and be happy for several years until the management will tell him to tone it down, that he’s being too much.
When he won’t have fanservice to turn to, he’s going to find himself a girlfriend, and he’ll convince himself he’s happy. He’s actually going to succeed for a short time, until he realizes he has been comparing her to someone else, someone she has no logical possibility of comparing to.
When he’ll get the opportunity to get away, even for a short while, he’ll take it. He’ll go away, travel to the other end of the world for more than a month, and he’ll hope that he can get some perspective. That’s what Sho is going to tell him to do, anyway.
And he will.
The other end of the world won’t be able to offer Nino what he wants. Because what he wants is at home.
So when he goes home, he’ll start planning how to tell everything. It’s going to take a while, and he’ll fear that he won’t ever get around to actually carry through, but in the end, everything will spill out of him when they’re on tour, and in an unnamable hotel, everything he’s ever going to hope for will happen.
After that, he’ll write Niji and won’t give a shit if it’s obvious to everyone.
He’ll promise and get promised in return (“It’s us, I love you, you, forever,”) and he’ll never forget the years that came and went and helped him.
He’ll grow older and he’ll love and be loved, and he’s seriously going to hate how most of those silly clichés about happily ever after will apply to him and them. They’re going to have their ups and downs, rough patches and tough spots, and sometimes they’ll feel helpless and want to be able to get away from each other, but most of the time, they’ll be happy.
Of course, when Nino is 16, he doesn’t know all that’ll happen, he won’t be able to predict and imagine.
All he knows is that when his 16-year-old self meets Ohno Satoshi in Hawaii, he’s falling in love.
