I went on a Pokémon hunt with a friend yesterday, and when our feet were sore and we had gorged on delicious sushi, we decided to go watch Star Trek Beyond again (show of hands, who's surprised? No one) and it's still super awesome.
Still a ton of spoilers, sorry, averting all the eyes, I suppose?
We could all learn something from this movie - in a time where the world seems as polarized as ever, the crew of the Enterprise stand firmly behind the premise that there is strength in unity.
In Jim Kirk news (again, who's surprised? STILL NO ONE), I seriously can't with his face when Sabotage starts up and he says "Good choice." What an astounding difference from the first film, that angry young man rebelling against everything and not fitting in everywhere, all his potential and genius being drowned in alcohol and anger, to this one where he is a wildly competent captain who has proved, beyond all reason, that he will die for his crew. Even when his home is being thrown from the sky, even when he's scared for his crew, he keeps calm and is the last man standing on the ship, and had it been necessary, he would have gone down with it. He's confident - he may have an existential, on-going crisis, but he trusts himself and his abilities, and it's so awesome to see.
And hearing "Better die saving lives than live taking them, that's what I was born into," was no less heartbreaking the second time around, knowing Jim really has died saving his crew. Oh man, I have so many Jim Kirk feelings.
(I also want
this an unreasonable amount. Maybe after Comic Con in August?)
