Captain's Personal Log
Stardate 57175.3

The best advice I ever received was give to me over two decades ago.  From Captain DeSoto.  He told me:  "When you get your own ship, and go on your first mission...you will make a serious mistake, one that will have lasting consequences.  Not 'could', not 'might' --'will'.  You will make the mistake, that can't be helped.  But if you remember that, if you accept it, then you can probably keep the mistake from being too big."

And boy was he right.

On my first mission, I made some doozies of mistakes.  I made one decision that set into motion a chain of events that eventually led to the annihilation of an entire planet.  And possibly a whole region of space.  Millions of people died, all the ones we weren't able to evacuate.  Of course, at the time I made the decision, little was understood about the spacial phenomenon.  And hindsight is always 20/20.  Next time--and no matter how hard I try to prevent a next time, there will be one--I am going to remember Captain DeSoto's words a little sooner and accept that mistakes will be made.  And maybe then I'll be able to come to terms with my limits as a human, as a man.
