And this chapter pretty much cemented my interest in the new arc - and also foretells that no, Kubo hasn't forgotten all the threads he's been weaving this entire time. In fact, it may be now that they're finally starting to slowly come together.

No. Not at all. Apart from the physical resemblance there's just nothing in common between them. What Masaki has done in the past two chapters -confronting Ryuuken and going against the rules to pursue her own ideals and offing that Hollow in the way she did- are two things Orihime would never do. She lacks the agressiveness and general courage to engage in a fight like that or to even have such a direct verbal spat with someone close to her.
