Purportedly, when Galieo Galilei was brought before a tribunal of the Church to recant his theories, he did. As he was leaving, one of his former students, brazen and contemptuous, said "Pity the country without a hero." And slowly, sadly, Galileo turned around and said, "Pity the country that needs a hero."

I think it is rare to love someone, to really love someone, and to love someone known to you only through brilliance of type and text, rarer still. And so, tonight, and forever after, that I may drink the distilled genius of undiluted Spirits, I drink for Hunter Stockton Thompson, the hero of a hopeless generation. Que descanse en paz.
