So, after I finally got home from work today (around 2045, that's 8:45 PM to some of you), I realized two things:
- I'd missed the NCIS finale and honestly didn't care (you have no idea how badly stating that pains me), and
- I hadn't watched Sunday's episode of Game of Thrones!
See, on Sunday, I crashed around 1800 (6:00 PM) thanks to some NyQuil to ward off an allergy attack or head cold or something, and I repeated this when I came home yesterday, so the ep had slipped my mind. So I sat down to watch it.
Overall, it was pretty good, although some of the exposition scenes just felt unnecessary. What did the Theon Greyjoy & Prostitute conversation do to really advance the plot that couldn't have been done better? Yeah, I get that they're trying to set up Greyjoy's future activities, but it felt tacked on an unnecessary. Ditto that with the Loras and Renly scene - and seriously? That's the best they could do for Loras? He looks like he's 135 lbs tops. A strong wind will knock that guy over. Bad casting decision, IMO.
Two things really did stand out to me, though:
- The awesome choreography when the Hound kneels at Robert's command so the Mountain's decapitating stroke whiffs over the Hound's head. That was really cool.
- The actor playing Jaime - he did this subtle transition from "I'm in complete control of this fight" to "Oh, crap, this guy can actually hold his own and I might be in trouble" during the fight with Ned that I really dug.
Still, even with my minor gripes, GOT is certainly holding my attention. I'd say it was the best thing on TV right now but since its frankly the only thing I'm watching anymore (thanks, Hollywood, for ensuring I could care less about your network crap) apart from new episodes of Doctor Who (and that Gaiman ep that aired this weekend? Best. Episode. EVER.) I actually have very little to base such an opinion on ...
Sadly, there is actually very little on or coming on that makes me excited. I might give Sci-Fi's "Alphas" a try (but given their history with TV shows, I have my doubts), but until Justified season 3 comes on or the football season resumes, I'm pretty much up the creek. NCIS is, for all intents and purposes, dead to me - I get that a lot of people still like it, but to me, its become such a pale shadow of its former glory that it hurts to watch the cliches and stereotypes play out. All the other procedurals are just ... dull. Its like Hollywood has taken everything I don't like about television and decided that's what is the norm.
Crap. Now I feel like my dad. "When I was your age, television didn't totally suck donkey ..."
