"I do think the fake falling to sleep was brilliant and perfectly timed. I thought they were going the, Sofia isn't sleeping all night so I randomly fall asleep, and what they did was so much better."

Loved the expression on Alex/Justin's face when she did that. Priceless!

I thought Arizona's scenes were great.

Do I think she was a bit harsh , yes and no. Jackson wanted this surgery but as soon as Arizona planted one seed of doubt ,he bailed. If it was Alex , Cristina or Meredith chances are they wouldn't have doubted themselves like Jackson did. IMO she tested him and he failed. She was once a resident too so I am sure this is how her attending taught and tested her back in the day.

Yeah Arizona was great during this episode. I also thought it was more of her wanting what was best for her patient than giving that speech to Jackson because of Alex and the fellowship. Arizona has always been one to do what was right and not just play favorites and any other petty games other attendings have done in the past. I'm sure she would have said the same had it been Alex. She just wanted what was best for the little boy. She might have been harsher on Jackson because as others have said he has been off his game and really Jackson has never shown an interest in Peds. He's one who has just bounced around services since he's been on the show. So that might have been part of her hesitancy (Does he know what to do when he's never been on Peds). I'm sure she would have done the same thing had it been Meredith or Cristina. Another part I feel is that motherhood seems to have changed her. She's seeing things from a different perspective which just makes her even more protective of her patients.

First of all, heelies! Loved when she rolled up to Alex all smiles, laughed at their interaction, and when she rolled away past Chief Webber, he turned to watch her roll off. Then during the surgery with Avery, I loved that Avery said "Yes, mam" to her. I actually think Avery may be a little afraid of Arizona, lol, after he called Peds "babysitting" and Arizona set him straight in S6. He called her "Mam" then too, ha ( ... )

Yeah, I agree with everything you've said - also that I wish the show had explained it better. They quite often use Arizona as 'prompts' for other people's stories, which means she often acts in a way which could be OOC; for example, not standing up to Stark regarding the kid back in season 7. That was primarily so that the April/Stark stuff could happen. And it worked for Arizona at the time considering how uncertain her life was, but because it was from April's POV it takes a little more work to figure out Arizona's motivations.

Great to see a happier, confident, go-getter, Heelie wearing Arizona again. Gosh I've missed her.

I may have misunderstood the surgery stuff - but it seemed to me Avery was going to do a straight line surgery (not sure about the wording here) and Arizona wanted him to do a different type or approach.

That to me indicated a couple of things. As a surgeon, I think it important to follow a course of action. Meredith for example - stuck with using the instrument she was most comfortable with and didn't let Derek talk her out of it. Avery on the other hand changed the way he'd approach the surgery so Arizona would let him do it.

I think Arizona guilting him out the way she did was in character and the right thing to do. She needed him to stand up and say, no I've got this, I can do this like he did during the S.P. to Bailey. He didn't do that with Arizona which meant he genuinely wasn't confident in doing this particular surgery.

I liked it.

I saw it the same way, too. I thought she was a little harsh... but that's Arizona's teaching style. She's tough on her students (as are all the attendings) but she'll give credit when credit is due. And you're right - if, as a fifth year resident, Avery can't deal with the responsibility involved in operating on anyone and changing the course of their life, then he needs to change it. What woulda happened if he'd botched the surgery?

Great to see a happier, confident, go-getter, Heelie wearing Arizona again. Gosh I've missed her.

Ditto!

Honestly, I think Arizona could've been worse. I think her ramble about being a Mom and the babies future was a good way to get Avery to stop, think and decide if he was the right one to do the surgery.

I mean she could've just come down on him, yelled at him or simply kick him out.

Remember how she yelled at Alex when he went off on that boys parents. Then, after yelling she turned around and told him he'd be good in Peds.

I honestly think if Avery had stood his ground, she would've let him do the surgery. Though since it was a plastics case, I wonder why Mark wasn't there along with Arizona supervising ...

I was thinking about the significance of Arizona calling Avery "Gunther" twice before the surgery. I'm wondering if perhaps that was her way of reminding him that he does have the skills to pull off the surgery, before she tested him on his confidence?

And since she apparently knows Christina isn't the Gunther, I wonder if she asked Mark for her $50 back, lol.
