evil, sex, and rape on space cases

Cat (curiouscat28) said something that made me think. She said "We never found out exactly what Shank did to Elmira so she couldn't "see anymore." For all we know, he beat her up, gave her a concussion, and raped her ( Read more... )

we're all adults here - really, het, the universe, slash, ships

Do you think it's possible that Shank could've done something like that, to his own daughter?
My knee-jerk reaction to this is to say "no". However, incest for the sake of preserving royal lineage is as common as sliced bread, so I'd have to actually say the jury is still out. I definitely think he tortured her for information, but the rape thing could go either way.

How do you think the Spung culture is?
Honestly, they remind me a bit of America in the Lewis and Clark days. OMG EXPAND! Maybe the Spung believe that they have a right to the spots in space they've attacked, and they consider the Sol System some type of hinterland they can tap for resources. Oooh... spooky parallel.

And Elmira aside, raped or unraped, do you think she's a virgin?
I'm guessing that the Spung pull that thing where girls are married off as soon as they hit puberty, so I would guess that she's technically already married and has already lost her virginity to her "husband".

Who on the ship has had sex, and with what gender?
Now, everybody here has gone "so and so is totally gay". This may seem like a bit of a double standard because Yugami and I kind of fostered the whole idea of slash even *existing* for this fandom, but you might notice in the general fan wank that has been written by me (I believe this goes for Yugami as well) we have never actually used the word "gay". It was always my personal perception that the cultural implications of being bisexual or homosexual have changed in two hundred years, just as they were drastically different if you compare the present to 1805. In many cultures, homosexuality is considered transitory. People always say, "wow the Spartans were so fucking gay" well yes, but that was expected of them when they joined the military. Two men in love fighting side-by-side made the rapport just that much stronger by the Spartan's reckoning. After you got out of the military, you were expected to get a wife and have some kids. Otherwise, who the hell was going to be soldiers after you retired? Maybe the military pulls a total opposite of the "don't ask, don't tell" and changes it to "screw the asking and telling and find yourself a boyfriend".

It's also common in certain societies that it doesn't matter who you hook up with in the short term. You screw who you think is hot and that's all there is to it; doesn't matter what kind of plumbing your significant other has.* It may be a little idealistic of me, but I think that that's the kind of view the society of the SC universe has.

As for who's had sex and who hasn't, I think you can kind of take it as read that the two adults have probably gotten at least *some* action at some point in time. I remember hearing somewhere that the average age for losing your virginity is eighteen, so I guess that means chances are Harlan has been with somebody too. As for the gender of the characters' partners, I don't really think it's relevant because of what I said before.

One other thing, Cat seemed worried about this topic being posted because PAD's wife (and therefore, possibly PAD himself) reads this community.

*puts on mod hat* AS MOD, I DECLARE THAT I'm more into free speech than politically correct (or is it fandomly correct?) discussion. If PAD emails myself or Yugami (or posts a comment) telling us to shut up about material that is not considered "Y7" I have a legal obligation to comply, but unless that happens, everything's free here. As long as there is no kiddy porn, I'll allow intelligent discussion of anything pertaining to the fandom. If anybody feels uncomfortable with the subjects that come up on this forum, feel free to not read whatever you're offended by. Ya'll are in charge of your own blinders.

* I guess for the record I should say that marriage is a totally different issue here. I read recently that homosexuals in certain countries like Nepal have to come to terms with the fact that they are gay, and their family is expecting them to marry the man/woman they've been fixed up with.

You make a lot of good points. In the future, homosexuality will probably (hopefully) be more accepted.

Let me just clarify a few things. I tend to get paranoid about, well, random things. I'll admit it. It's a character flaw. I actually told Jade that, after reading what I had posted, I surprised myself with how Davenport-esque I sounded. Yes, I can be paranoid. Yes, I can be a prude. Yes, I faint a lot (but THAT'S due to low blood pressure). But I have no problems with this discussion or any others that have been posted in this forum. I'm all for free speech. If the occasion should arise that PAD outwardly disapproves of this (or any) discussion here...then, yeah, I'd shut up and smile and nod to apease the The Almighty Powerful PAD. But that'll probably never happen, so I should shut up, stop worrying...and eventually find a way to stop fainting. But mainly stop worrying. I'll work on it.

the whole "gay" terminology thing is kinda complicated. as a gay person, the labeling thing is completely crazy, from people who are gay taking back words like "gay" and "fag" and "queer" as pride-words, and other people who want to do away with labels altogether, and people who think that they should be allowed to marry and people who think that marriage should be done away with altogether... and i personally hate the whole "coming out" process, because people's sexualities shouldn't be a big deal, and there shouldn't be labels, people should just BE but as of the moment, in this cultural climate, "gay" is still a term thats relevant. i mean, ive had sex with guys before, because sometimes i like guys, and then i get yelled at by my gay friends and then all the straight people are like 'ewwww, you like women, ew, stop looking at me please go away,' and it's crap, the coming out process.

hopefully in the space cases future people can just be whatever, prefer one sex or the other or neither, and hook up with whoever.

i was re-watching the whole "truth hurts" epsiode and it seems that they're all virgins, just the way they handle the whole "omg, suzee likes you" thing. not very maturely. someone else commented that harlan was the sorta show-offy guy that's so over the top with showoffiness that he probably never gets much action because he's sorta an overconfident geek. i'm sorta seeing that. but maybe in the future the virgin/nonvirgin distinction, like the sexuality distinction, won't matter that much. i'm not sure.

this is something else unrelated, but what do you think the status of the spung is, politically? i'm watching the episodes and it seems like they're everywhere and theyre terrifying, but no one ever seems to comment on how they got pwned by the UPP. i don't understand their structure, either internally or in connection with the greater universe.

I actually took a course in human sexuality, and one of the things they talked about pertaining to the sociology of the GLBT culture was that bisexual individuals usually have the hardest time of things. You can't fully fit in with the breeders, and you can't fully fit in with the gay people either. It's kind of widely believed by both sides that the individual is in some sort of transitory phase and will be come completely gay or completely straight eventually. It's interesting (albeit kinda sad) to see that the textbook crap I learned has a real life application for you. ;_;

...maybe in the future the virgin/nonvirgin distinction, like the sexuality distinction, won't matter that much. i'm not sure.

Stuff like that could go either way. I have met some incredibly immature people who have lost their virginity, just as I have met some really mature people that have never even kissed somebody.

...what do you think the status of the spung is, politically?

You mentioned they have a really wide, sweeping presence throughout the whole of occupied space (the galaxy, whatever) and yet they still got their asses kicked by the UPP. My gut would jump to the conclusion that they're trying to establish some kind sense of colonial power, but you'd think they'd make the outlying areas they occupy a bit more fortified. It could be possible that the Earthers along with the other races just provided a manpower advantage over the Spung. I always kind of speculated that the number of Earthers dwarfed the Rigelian-descended populations. Maybe the Spung (along with the enslaved Andromedans) had enough technology to pose a threat, but there simply weren't enough of them?

yeah, it really sucks. and i feel annoying complaining about it, but it's hard to figure out whether i want to come out or not, since everyone thinks that bisexuals are horny or doing it for attention or full of stds or not able to be monogymous or whatever.

im trying to figure out what harlan would do after sex. smoke a cigarette? giggle? i dunno. he seems kinda immature, but who knows. he's also gorgeous ("i love a little brown sugar," says my friend s), which might've been a factor in him losing it. do you know, in an unrelated note, what happened to his finger?

as for the spung, i think that they were probably spread too thin. I read one story where the Spung had "harasan" or something to battle over who was going to be the next big Warlord, and they had to have a contest over who spread out the empire the farthest. well, maybe the Spung War was just a part of that battle, and even though Shank didnt win the UPP, he had enough other stuff that he won, which is why he's so important now.
